BTW I would like to see how they celebrate Christmas "en las casa Wolowitz". Traditionally catholic like Bernadette used to celebrate? Or do they celebrate the Jewish Hanuka? Or both?

Another question is, will the Wolowitz baby be Jewish or Catholic?

I happen to have a friend who had a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. He is neither. My friend has said that to be raised Jewish one needs a Jewish mother.

In Catholicism one enters the church via baptism. Infant baptism is based on the faith of the parents. One of the parents needs to be a practising Catholic (or the kid would have to wait until he/she is older to become Catholic). Bernadette and Howard would have to have a Catholic wedding first before having their child baptised.

Not strictly true (you can be raised anything you/your parents wish), but I know what he's saying.

And we know that didn't happen.

Well if they really wanted to they could still do it. Since it has never been mentioned it would seem unlikely.

They would have to say the children would be raised Catholic. To be taken seriously Bernadette (as the Catholic) would have to start attending mass weekly. I doubt this would come up on TBBT

That would be interesting indeed.

That´s interesting thanks for the information djsurrey!

Actually,  according to the Catholic religion, in order to have a child baptized, the parents need not to be practicing Catholic, to be married with a Catholic wedding, or to be married at all. If one of those occurrences happen, traditionally there have to be two godparents for the child (if the parents are  Catholic and married with a Catholic ceremony godparents are optional), who should take upon themselves the task to help raising the child as a Catholic and hence who should be living according to the Catholic faith. Anyway, since nowadays the number of divorced or not practicing Catholics is constantly increasing, the requirements about Godparents are a bit relaxed.

One might find different opinions and even different practices but...

Quote

The instruction reaffirming the place of infant baptism in the life of the Church which was made public on November 21, 1980 by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, stipulates the following:

"Assurances must be given that the gift thus granted can grow by an authentic education in the faith and Christian life, in order to fulfil the true meaning of the sacrament. As a rule, these assurances are to be given by the parents or close relatives, although various substitutions are possible within the Christian community. But if these assurances are not really serious, there can be grounds for delaying the sacrament; and if they are certainly non-existent, the sacrament should be refused... More is required of parents than merely presenting their infant for baptism. The more essential condition is a "true and living faith by which they adhere to Christ and confirm their commitment to the new covenant". In the absence of the reasonable hope that the child will be raised in the Catholic faith, the parents and priest not only may but should postpone the baptism until such time as there is some evidence of living faith."

[snip]

Moreover, the sacrament of baptism is not merely related to the child. In the case of "infant baptism" the role of the parents is very important, as they are the persons who are giving assurance that they will raise the child being baptised in the Catholic faith and upon Catholic values. The Church deems that couples not married in the Catholic Church do not offer the necessary assurance that they will raise the child in accordance with the Catholic faith.

Those that I mentioned are the guidelines of the Italian Bishops' Conference since 1993; there might be some old fashioned priest who would deny baptism to the child of an unmarried couple, but it is really an exception. Very recently Pope Francis stated that baptism should never be denied to a child and, as a warning, he has officiated by himself the baptism of the kid of a couple not married in a catholic ceremony, and he even didn't require godparents in this case.

There may be circumstances that warrant consideration outside the norm but my understanding has been  that in the Archdiocese of Vancouver couples like Bernadette and Howard would be encouraged to have a Catholic wedding first. Neither of them have had a previous marriage one would wonder why they would seek baptism but not holy matrimony? One does not just pick and choose.

I don't think we will know what stage we are at until we get a press release. I don't see how they can let TBBT go when there is nothing better on the horizon yet. The other sitcom I watch is on ABC. :smoke:

Actually, that's exactly what people do.

It's a free country, and you can choose to follow a religious practice, or not.

In Howard and Bernadette's case, it is further complicated by their different faiths.

Sure, but your original question was would the child be Catholic or Jewish.

Since neither is observant it is not all that complicated. They will most likely just let the kid decide when he/she gets old enough.

I must have misunderstood you.  The Sacrament of Baptism is the first rite of initiation and it normally takes place some time after birth and usually in a church. An emergency baptism can be done by anyone if the baby is not likely to survive. One is not Catholic before Baptism. It does not work like citizenship.

Apparently some aspects of my earlier comments were wrong. At the link above it states the issue is that the parents intend to raise the child as a Catholic and it is expected that they regularly attend mass. The Catholic wedding is a separate issue.

I think you might have.

What I meant was, will the Wolowitz baby be raised to be Jewish or Catholic?

I've never believed in the idea of being born of a particular faith.

To me, that makes as much sense as being born of a particular political belief, being born as a supporter of a particular sports team, of even being born a fan of a particular sitcom.

While I kind of doubt this will come up in the show there could be potential for some comedy if Mike brings up the question.  I recall Bernadette in 5.16...

Quote

Bernadette: And just to be safe, when you talk to him, don’t bring up Jimmy Carter, gardeners, foreign people, homosexuals, Sean Penn, Vatican II, gun control, organic food, the designated hitter rule, recycling or the fact that you’re Jewish.

Howard: Got it, got it. Will you e-mail me that list?

Bernadette: So the thing to watch for, if he’s shouting at you, you’re okay, but if he starts to get real quiet, leave as quickly as you can without making eye contact. Not in a straight line, throw some zigs and zigs in there.

I wonder if Howard will become a stay at home Dad?

I was watching s6, such an awesome season. Closet ep prob a stand out. But I was wondering with Alex. How she became attracted to Leonard. Was that a window to the audience. If the audience was Penny they would be attracted to Leonard not Sheldon LOL. Don't get me wrong Sheldon has his appeals, being tall. But from a hetrosexual pov. I have always found Leonard's Aesthetic, Adroginis look kinda appealing, If I was a blonde girl :D. My point is, do you think they would bring back Alex for Raj? I mean it was suggested Raj had  a thing for Alex.  I don't know i liked Alex. She went away after Leonard commited to Penny. But I Think Alex and Raj could be a thing. Unless they are planning on making Raj alone by the end like Joey was in Friends.

I would like to see them bring Alex back, but she would probably be a PH.D. now.  I wonder how Penny would like Alex coming back and hanging with the guys, would she be as tolerant of Alex around Leonard as Leonard was tolerant of her flirting with doctors in her job?

Hmm yeah I guess difference is Penny knew she was flirting. Leonard had no idea, and was absolutely clueless lol. I would like to see Alex back. What ever the actress is doing atm I don't know. Shes prob out of Raj's league anyway haha. I have no idea where they are going with Raj anyway.

It would be hypocritical of her to complain, given how she hung with the guys, when Leonard was with Priya.

Since he promised to take care of the baby, while she works, I guess she will remind him.

The first weeks would be hard for him, because he couldn´t spend the whole day playing his Xbox or PS4, while you hear the baby crying in the background.

And after some sleepless nights and a dozens of diapers later, he would look like this:
