This gives it a 5.8 demo with 21.52 million viewers for Live + 7. In viewers, this will move it to number 2 for the week, about a million behind Sunday Night Football and it will be the number one Entertainment program. As for demo, the show had a 3.8 for Live + same day, and went up 1.6 in the Live + 3, to 5.4. Empire had a 4.2 for Live + Same Day, and went up 1.3 for Live + 3, giving it a 5.5. TBBT picked up another four tenths between four day and seven day DVR viewers. I expect, at worst, TBBT will be tied with Empire in Live + 7, and it's possible that Empire will only pick up two tenths in Live + 7, giving it a Live + 7 of 5.7, leaving TBBT either tied or with, the highest rated entertainment show for the week. Wow...what a debacle for Empire, just checked and in last Season premiere it had a 9.4 demo for Live + 7! It really helps to get things into prospective for TBBT! For most things Vittoria, I can san, no, it isn't always first. Even by most measures it isn't first, most of the time. If you mean demo, for Live + Same Day, Live + 3 Day, or Live + 7. It's Sunday Night Football and even Thursday Night Football that has been higher than non-sports programming for about three years now. Since last year, Empire has been higher in demo for all three measures, for non-sports programs. If you mean viewers, it depends on the week for either of the measures. Sunday Night Football, and even NCIS beats TBBT most weeks in Live + Same day. For Live + 3, Football is the highest, and it depends on the week as NCIS and TBBT have beaten football. For Live + 7 it's either Sunday Night Football, or TBBT, again, it depends on the week (for example last week, Sunday Night Football will beat TBBT by over a million viewers). For daytime shows, the women 25-54 is the more important ratings. As you can see, TBBT still does rather well with this demo. There is a show called Weekend Adventure. It is a group of nature programs broadcast during the day on weekends for kids. I've pulled it as it is not late Afternoon/early evening programming. Tensor
The final ratings for Empire were a 3.7 (it was 3.6 for the overnights, tied with TBBT's finals). This has been the closest TBBT has been to Empire, since near the end of 2014. When we get the Live + 3 each of them and based on those numbers for this week, I have a feeling TBBT will pass Empire. As for renewal prospects, I now don't think the drop, of the premiere will affect renewal. Most series dropped by around 11-12% off their premiere week numbers, TBBT only dropped 6%, putting it further ahead of most other series, and almost catching Empire (3.6 to 3.7). In addition, with it's Live + 7 increase (2.0 and almost six million viewers) I don't see it collapsing, and I believe it will remain one of the top two or three shows for the year, in both demo and viewers. Tensor
Another indication of TBBT strength this season. Last night, CBS ran repeats of the show at 8 PM and 9 PM (the NFL network had last nights game). The 8 PM show got a 4.7 in households, for second place in its time slot and the 9 PM show got a 3.7 household rating and finished second in its time slot. Over all, TBBT finished second for the night, with that 4.6 and fifth with the 3.7. Here is the top seven: Grey's Anatomy 6.0 TBBT 8 PM 4.6 Chicago Med 4.5 The Blacklist 4.1 TBBT 9 PM 3.7 Notorious 3.4 How to Get Away with Murder 3.4 All, except for the two TBBT were new broadcasts, all in either their first or second week. Tensor
I'll have a full post up this weekend or Monday, but for now, TBBT's ad revenue, for a 30 second spot, dropped from $348,300 last year, to $289,100 this year. This is a drop of ~$59,000 per thirty second spot and is about $650,000 less per show, and would be about $15 million less for a season of 24 new episodes. This is still the second highest per ad cost, for an entertainment program. As I said, full post later this weekend.
Tensor
2016-17 Ad Rates, and Previous Season Comparison 03 October, 2016 This thread looks at the various ratings of TBBT. What we need to remember is broadcast television is a business. The ratings we see in this thread, translate into how much an ad costs, and how much money the network gets. This post will look at what those ratings are mean in terms of ad rates. We will be looking at the ad rates for a 30 second ad on various shows, for the 2016-17 season. I’ll list how this year's top ten did for the last three years. I'll also look at how the ratings compare to the ad rates to see which shows bring more value to their broadcast company. Unless otherwise stated, “spot” refers to the average cost of a 30 second ad. First of all, most of the ad rates are set at the “Upfronts” in May, when the networks trot out their new fall schedules. Most of the ads are bought “upfront” (hence the name) while a few are sold closer to when the show airs. Ad Age questions some of the companies buying the ads, and get an estimate on what it will cost to run a spot on each show in the fall. One thing to remember, these are ESTIMATES, of the AVERAGE cost of a spot. For instance, in 2013-14 season, the average price of a spot for American Idol was $356,000. However, near the end of the year, especially during the champion results show, the price can go much higher (in it’s heyday, it could pull in an spot rate of $1 million or higher). Of course this means that some of it’s other nights are much less. I used American Idol, but any competition show works out in a rather similar manner. For scripted series, the difference is much less. However, reruns command less money, and that is figured into the average. With that in mind, here are the top ten shows, as far as ad rates for the 2016-2017 season and the two previous seasons For 2015-16 Top Ten Ad Costs Show 2016-17 2015-16 2014-15 +/- previous Sunday Night Football 673,700 603,000 627,000 +70,000 Thursday Night Football (CBS) 523,000 464,000 493,000 +59,000 Thursday Night Football (NBC)* 485,700 N/A N/A N/A Empire 437,100 497,000 N/A -60,000 The Big Bang Theory 289,100 348,000 345,000 -59,000 This is Us** 272,000 N/A N/A N/A Modern Family 224,000 240,000 282,000 -16,000 The Voice(Mon) 240,000 274,000 286,000 -34,000 The Voice(Tue) 202,600 233,000 254,000 -31,000 Grey's Anatomy 193,200 157,609 149,000 +36,600 * This is the first year for Thursday Night Football on NBC. ** This is the first year for This is Us Here is what the Top 10 looked like the three previous years: 2015-16 2014-15 2013-2014 Sunday Night Football 603,000 Sunday Night Football 627,000 Sunday Night Football 594,000 Empire 497,000 Thursday Night Football 492,000 American Idol (Wed) 502,000 Thursday Night Football 462,000 The Big Bang Theory 344,000 The Big Bang Theory 317,000 The Big Bang Theory 348,000 The Blacklist 283,000 The Voice 294,000 How to Get Away with Murder 253,000 The Voice (Mon) 274,000 American Idol (Thur) 289,000 The Voice (Mon) 240,500 The Voice (Tue) 253,000 Modern Family 282,000 Modern Family 240,000 American Idol (Wed) 243,000 The Voice(Tue) 279,000 The Voice (Tue) 233,000 Modern Family 240,000 New Girl 237,000 Scandal 224,500 New Girl 236,000 The Simpsons 232,000 Blindspot 209,700 American Idol (Thur) 225,000 Scandal 207,000 Since advertisers mainly look at the 18-49 demo, lets do the same thing we did for the ad rates, for the 18-49 rankings and see how well they correlate (Note: I've only included previous years to see the trend. Ad rates tend to fall slower than the ratings, so there is usually some residual, show reputation thing going on. A good example of this could be found in the 2012-13 season. TBBT was virtually tied with Modern Family in Demo, it was pulling in almost three million more people. Yet, Modern Family was getting $55,000 more per 30 second spot. It was getting $331,000, while TBBT was getting $276,000, based on the previous years ratings (and also the Emmy buzz for Modern Family) , Based on the previous years ratings, it would cost $60,181 for a ratings point on Modern Family and $50,181 for TBBT However, by the end of the year, Modern Family dropped to a 4.9 demo rating and TBBT rose to a 6.2. The result of setting ad prices at the beginning of the season is that that $55,000 more per spot cost, ended with 1.3 rating points less than TBBT. Modern Family pulled in 12.31 million viewers, over six million less than TBBT 18.68 million viewers. This means that the actual cost 67,555 per ratings point for Modern Family and $44,516 for a ratings point on TBBT. Tensor

Tensor
Week 03 Early Household Ratings and Top 25 Markets; 04 October, 2016 TBBT ran the episode last night, 10.03 The Dependence Transcendence at 8:00 PM and it had a 9.1 Household Rating, with a 15 share (9.1/1). Compare to last week's show of 9.2/14, this was down a tenth in Households and up a share point. In households, number one for the night was TBBT with that 9.1/15. In second was a two hour The Voice with a 7.9 Household and a 12 share (up two tenths in HH, even in share). In third was Dancing with the Stars with a 7.5 Household and a 12 share (even in HH and in share). From 8-8:30, while TBBT was on, The Voice had a 7.4 with an 11 Share, and Dancing with the Stars had a 7.3 with an 12 Share. Those jumped to 7.9 for The Voice and 7.7 for Dancing with the Stars at 8:30, after TBBT was off. In the top 25 markets, TBBT was number one with a 3.6 demo, second was The Voice with a 3.0 and in third was Kevin Can Wait with a 1.9 I'll get to the overnight demo and viewers when they come in. Tensor
Week 03 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 04 October, 2016 CBS ran TBBT episode 10.03 The Dependence Transcendence. It pulled in a 3.4 demo, with a 13 share and 14.40 million viewers. This was down, from last weeks premiere overnight numbers, by a tenth of a point in Demo (3.6), one point in share, and up 390,000 in viewers. I expect it to increase at least a tenth in the finals. ETA: While TBBT generally adjusts up, it may not this week( and possibly down). While it wasn't on CBS nationally, the football game was on the Minneapolis CBS station, and those viewers will be removed from TBBT numbers. Normally it offsets, but we'll have to wait for the finals. TBBT was number one in demo with that 3.4. In second was The Voice with a 2.9/10, was down three tenths in demo and two tenths in share from last week. In third was Kevin Can Wait with a 2.4/8, down three tenths in demo and two tenths in share from last week. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 14.40 million viewers. In second was The Voice with 11.58 million viewers, up 560,000. And in third was Dancing with the Stars, with 10.57 million viewers, down 370,000 from last weeks third place show, Kevin Can Wait. In the 18-34 demo, TBBT was in first with a 1.9, down five tenths from last week. In second was The Voice at 1.8, also down five tenths from last week's show. In third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 1.3, again down five tenths from last weeks show. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.9, up a tenth. In second, was The Voice with a 3.8, down four tenths, and in third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 3.5, down three tenths. The finals will be up later, when I get them. Tensor
The final Wednesday night ratings came in, and Empire finished with a 3.4 demo rating. This is a tenth of a point below what TBBT had on Monday (3.5). This is the first time TBBT has beaten Empire, in demo, when they both aired in the same week, since 2014. As a note, Modern Family had a 2.2 demo, this tied with Kevin Can Wait as the second highest demo for a comedy. As far as viewers, TBBT had 14.32 million, with NCIS pulling in 14.44 million. Based on the DVR viewing numbers so far this year, TBBT should move past NCIS and end up as the highest rated, and have the most viewers for all non-sports shows this week. While there was some consternation at the drop in TBBT ratings, for the premiere, compared to the previous year, other shows have dropped more in ratings or viewers. At this time, based on early season results (demo drop by Empire and viewer drop by NCIS), and DVR viewing so far, TBBT has a chance to be the highest rated, and most viewed non-sports show this year. Tensor
News, Notes and Analysis, Friday 07 October, 2016 Since it's Friday, I thought I'd add this bit of research I did for someone. This past week, TBBT had a 3.5 demo for the show, while Modern Family had a 2.2 demo this week. There was a question as to whether TBBT or Modern Family has fallen further from it's ratings high. There is a difference between comparing the actual demo numbers for the show, and comparing the actual demo numbers vs the average for all shows, for that particular year. These numbers can be found, on the excellent website "Spotted Ratings" It just takes some digging into the charts they have, along with some calculations. For example, in season three, TBBT had it's highest actual demo numbers, a 5.26 demo average for the year. However, there were more viewers watching broadcast television that year, so it was easier for the show to get to that number. Since then, the number of viewers watching broadcast television has decrease, to the point where if you use the 5.26 demo in 2009-10 season (based on more viewers) the show's demo would only have been a 2.72 demo based on the number of viewers last year . So, I'm going to give you the drop based on raw numbers, and then the drop based on the numbers adjusted for available viewers. All the following are based on Live + Same Day. Here are the actual numbers for Modern Family and TBBT, with TBBT's season 1 starting in 2007, and the percentage increase or decrease: Season TBBT % MF % 2007-08 3.26 2008-09 3.79 +16 2009-10 5.26 +39 3.76 2010-11 4.00 -24 4.42 +18 2011-12 4.97 +24 5.05 +14 2012-13 5.25 + 6 4.23 -16 2013-14 5.07 - 4 3.54 -16 2014-15 4.32 -15 3.19 -10 2015-16 3.73 -14 2.55 -20 A couple of notes. That 24% decrease in 2010-11 for TBBT was when the show moved to Thursday, from Monday. TBBT increased by 55% it's first two years, while MF increased by 32% it's first two years. MF has double digits percentage drops since their high, four years ago. TBBT drop by 24% after the move, increased the next two years, and has dropped the last three years, only the last two have been double digit. We can use either 2009-10 or 2012-13 as TBBT high demo year (it's only a one hundredth difference) and find it has fallen about 1.5 demo points from either high point that would be about a 29% drop, since 2012-13. In the case of Modern Family, it dropped dropped 2.5 points from it's high, a loss of almost 50% of it's audience. Either way, Modern Family has dropped more, by almost a point in actual demo drop, and by 21% more in percentage than TBBT dropped. Let's compare those numbers, based on the decrease of viewers in the time since the shows high point. The average demo, for all shows, dropped from 2.21 in 2012-13 (TBBT high) to 1.46 for 2015-16 (last year), that's a 34% drop for the average demo, compared to only 29% for TBBT. The average demo dropped from 2.36 in 2011-12 (MF's high point) to, again, 1.46 in 2015-16 (last year). That is a drop, for an average show, of 39%, while Modern Family dropped by almost 11% more than the average show. How does this look, if you use the available viewers from last year, for all the yeas the show has been on. If you do, you get the following demo table: Season TBBT % MF % 2007-08 1.44 2008-09 1.84 +27 2009-10 2.72 +47 1.95 2010-11 2.29 - 16 2.54 +30 2011-12 3.07 +34 3.11 +22 2012-13 3.63 +18 2.92 - 6 2013-14 3.92 + 8 2.74 - 6 2014-15 3.74 - 5 2.76 0 2015-16 3.73 0 2.55 - 7 You'll notice that TBBT's high season now moves to 2013-14. This is because while it did drop in 2013-14, it dropped much less than the drop in broadcast viewers. You can also see Modern Family's only dropped three of the last four years (it even went up, although not by much). So, how does the drop from each shows highs look now? Well, TBBT dropped from it's high in 2013-14, of 3.92, to last years 3.73, a drop of only 0.19, and a percentage drop of only 5%. Meanwhile, Modern Family dropped from their high of 3.11 in 2011-12, to last years 2.55. A drop of over a half a demo point, and a percentage drop of 18% Again, both measures show Modern Family has fallen further and faster than TBBT. In fact, if you include this year (a small sample so far, I know) TBBT is at 3.63, a drop of only a tenth from last year's final rating (that's about 3%), and Modern Family is at 2.37, almost two tenths (that's about 7%) lower than last year's final. So Modern Family continues to drop faster than TBBT. I fully expect to see MF in the mid to upper ones, this year(probably in the spring), as I expect to see upper twos for TBBT in the spring. One other bit. TBBT has averaged more than twice the demo of the average show over it's entire run. Over the last four years, it has had a demo that is two and a half times better than the average show. Those four years are the highest comedy years, compared to the average show, since Friends went off the air. Using the comparison to the average show for the year, season seven of TBBT, was actually higher than most of Friends final year. What pulled Friends ahead, was it's absolutely monstrous finale that had a 24.9 demo rating (remember, TBBT was the high entertainment show last week with a 3.5 demo). Tensor
Week 04 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 11 October, 2016 CBS ran TBBT episode 10.04 The Cohabitation Experimentation. It pulled in a 3.3 demo, with a 12 share and 14.06 million viewers, both lows for the year. This was down, from last weeks overnight numbers, by a tenth of a point in Demo (3.4), one point in share, and down 340,000 in viewers. I expect it to increase at least a tenth in the finals. ETA: There shouldn't be any adjustment due to the NFL Monday night game. One team had the game on its ABC affiliate, the other team had it on an independent station. TBBT was number one in demo with that 3.3. In second was The Voice with a 2.9/9, was even in demo and down a tenth in share from last week. In third was Kevin Can Wait with a 2.1/7, down three tenths in demo and a tents in share from last week. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 14.06 million viewers. In second was The Voice with 11.17 million viewers, down 410,000. And in third was Dancing with the Stars, with 10.45 million viewers, down 120,000 from last week. In the 18-34 demo, The Voice was in first with a 1.9, even with last week's number one show. In second was TBBT at 1.8, also down a tenth from last week's show. In third was Dancing With the Stars, with a 1.2, down a tenth from last weeks third place show. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.8, down a tenth. In second, was The Voice with a 3.7, down a tenth, and in third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 3.1, down four tenths. The finals will be up later, when I get them.
