Tensor Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Week 01; Week of 19 September, 2016 Expected Daily Posts, 15 September, 2016 Quote Five days to go before the season starts, and so I have this ready for the season, this is the first post in the Season 10 ratings thread. Similar to the last couple of years, here are the plans for the ratings, while TBBT is on Monday: Monday's will have the Live + 3 and the Live + 7. Live + 3 is usually delayed by a two weeks and Live + 7 is usually delayed by three weeks. I usually get the Live + 3 on Sunday so that will be up first, most of the time. I usually put the Live + 7 is up around noon EST (1600-1700) UTC. Tuesday will have the the Live + Same Day ratings. This includes the overnights, including households, demo, and viewers, along with the final daily ratings for TBBT. Households is usually out around 9:30-10 AM EST. The overnight demo and viewers is usually out around 11:30 AM EST. The final daily ratings are usually out around 4:30-5:30 PM EST. Wednesday will have the top ten programs for the previous week for demo and viewers. Also, around noon. Thursday will have the syndication ratings for two weeks previous. Again, around noon. Friday will usually be an off day, but I will occasionally write a post on some kind of ratings information. Other members, if they have the data, have provided the ratings for other countries. In the past members have provided ratings from Canada, Germany, and The United Kingdom. Once TBBT moves to Thursday, on the 24th of October, the order changes a bit. The post for the top ten programs for the previous week moves to Tuesday. The syndication post moves to Wednesday, and the overnight and final ratings posts move to Friday. Thursday becomes the day where an information post will go. While the times listed above are the usual times I get the ratings, holidays, and various other things sometimes delay the information. If it will be delayed (or even not available), I usually try to let everyone know with a post. As I've done for the last several years, I'll be putting up a post on what exactly those terms (Live + SD, Live + 7, demo, etc) mean, and how the ratings are gathered, so new members, who don't know those terms, will be able to follow along. And, of course, if anyone has a question, feel free to post it in this thread and I'll do my best to answer it. I'll also have a post on how TBBT did last year (I did one at the end of the year, but I'll put a shortened version here), compared to 2014-15 and 2015-16, along with how it did compared to other shows last year. There will also be some information on how TBBT repeats did last year (hint, the repeat ratings were higher than the average of all the first run shows). And toward the end of September, I usually get an estimate of the ad rates for the coming year and I have done a post comparing the previous years and the ten shows with the highest ad rates. Tensor Ratings Explanations and Terms; 15 September, 2016 Quote To begin the season, I'll explain how the Nielsen company gets the data, and what some of the terms mean. The Nielsen company gathers data in several ways, from a couple of different electronic boxes that are attached to the television, set top box, or DVR to the old fashioned diary method. Nielsen still uses the older diary method (where people write in what they are watching) for several reasons. First, to validate their statistical model. Remember, the Nielsen’s are a statistical measure. The diaries can also be compared to the set top boxes (both regular and People Meters). Using this, they can verify that their calculations on the boxes is correct, as the more data you have, the more accurate your results will be. Also, Nielsen uses the diaries to gather further demographic data to assist advertisers in targeting specific ages, genders, incomes, eductions, etc). There are some boxes that just record the channel that is being watched. Again, these are compared to the diaries to validate their statistical model, but are also used to get some quick data. These are also, what are called “People Meters”. Homes that have People Meters, have individuals enter their specific ID (which is tied to their age and gender) and these meters track what those people are watching, even if they are just channel surfing. In the case of DVRs, it measures what has been recorded and watched up to thirty days after it was on. People with their ID number sign in and out of the people meters, each time they start or stop watching TV. In the case of multiple people watching the same TV, the ID allows the meter to track how many and when people are watching. The meter can track someone who turns the TV on, and if another person signs in, shows two people watching the same program. If the original person leaves by signing out, it will still be tracking what the other person is now watching. Usually, each August, Nielsen estimates the number of households in the US that have televisions to use during the season. The current number of households, from August of 2016, is 118,400,000, with 301 million viewers, age 2 and older. Note, this is not how many households are tracked by Nielsen, but is the estimated total number, so the various breakdowns can be extrapolated, statistically, to the total number of households and viewers, along with the various breakdowns. Here are the various terms I usually use in the ratings articles. Overnights (or Fast Nationals): Are the preliminary ratings based on 56 metropolitan areas and is based on the Live + Same Day ratings. Overnights are based on what was scheduled in a specific time. TBBT starts the season on Monday's, at 8 PM. So, in overnights, it is assumed that a box tuned to CBS at 8 PM on Monday, is watching TBBT. Final Ratings: are the Overnight ratings, including adjustments for various reasons. For example, lets say a Chicago station has a special news bulletin for damage by a tornado in the Chicago area, or what happens a lot in the fall, a local football team is playing, the number of people watching the CBS station in Chicago would be deducted from the overnight ratings. Final ratings also include adjustments made when actual numbers (those are originally estimated based on the metropolitan areas) outside the 56 Metropolitan areas are reported. Also as CBS typically runs TBBT until 8:31. That extra minute can add a one or two tenth increase. Live + Same Day (SD): The number of households (and viewers) that watched a program, including DVR viewing until 3 a.m. locally, the next day. At 3 a.m., the data is automatically sent to Nielsen from the box. The overnights are usually released around 11 to 11:30 AM EST. The finals are usually released around 4-5 PM EST. Live + 3: The number of households (and viewers) that watch a program up to three days after the program airs. Again, there is a 3 a.m. cutoff. The Live + 3 became widely available last year. Prior to that, the Live + 3 was used by networks to promote a show's unusual increase.Live + 7: The number of households (and viewers) that watch a program up to seven days after the program airs. With the 3AM cutoff. Live + 7 comes out on the Monday three weeks after the week the show was broadcast. Currently a rating called C3 is used to set advertising rates. The difference between C3 and Live + 3 is the number of people watching the show, up to three days after the it airs. The C3 is the number of people who watch the the show AND THE COMMERCIALS. It has been shown that the C3 closely tracks the Live + SD (note, not the Live + 3). Ratings Point: The percentage of TV households out of all TV households, or percentage of a particular total or demo that are watching a particular program.Ratings Share: The percentage of households (or a particular total or demo), WHO HAVE THEIR TV ON, out of all households (or a particular total or demo) that are watching a particular program. Note that a Ratings point is one percent of the total households with a TV. Ratings Share point is one percent of the total households with a TV ON. For a simplified example, lets say the total number of TVs is 100 and there are 50 of them on. If 10 TVs are tuned to a specific program, the ratings point would be 10 (10 is 10% of 100). The ratings share would be 20 (10 is 20% of 50).Total Viewers: The total number of people watching a particular program. More than one person could be viewing a program in one house, say a family of four.Demo: This is the various breakouts of the Ratings points and shares. Age, gender, education level, race, etc. are all different demos. Most of the publicly available breakouts are based on age. In general, (I say this as I myself, am an exception to these generalizations) those people over 50 watch the most broadcast TV. The demo of 18-49 is, currently, what is used in ratings, as this group watches less than those over 50, so advertisers want to advertise on those show that have more of those viewers. The demo of 18-34 watch the least amount of broadcast TV, so shows that have this demo are really looked at closely by advertisers. Unless otherwise specified, the term demo, when used in these posts, means the 18-49 demo. My next post will be looking at how TBBT did last year, compared to the previous two years. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask and I'll try my best to give you an answer. Tensor Week 01 Early Household Ratings and Top 25 Markets; 20 September, 2016 Quote Well, here's our first look at the 2016-2017 ratings. TBBT ran the season 10 premiere episode last night, 10.01 The Conjugal Conjugate at 8:00 PM and it had a 10.6 Household Rating, with a 17 share (9.8/17). Compare to last seasons premiere of 11.6/17 this was down 9%. In households, number one for the night was TBBT with that 10.6/17. In second was The Voice with a 8.0 Household and a 8.0 share In third was Dancing with the Stars with a 7.6 Household and a 11 share. In the top 25 demo, TBBT was in first with a 4.1. In second was The Voice with a 3.3, and in third was Kevin Can Wait with a 2.3. Dancing with the Stars, which was in third in households, is an older skewing show and had a 1.8 in the top 25. Kevin Can Wait's drop from TBBT was almost identical to the drop, last year, of Life in Pieces. The Top 25 is simply the demo for the top 25 demographic areas. These usually have a set top box which enables us to get a quick read on the demo. This is not the final demo, it is simply a first look. The rest of the demographic areas are compiled and the total overnight demo is released around 11:30. For those worried about the ratings there is this tidbit: Both the second and third place shows were only down a bit (about a tenth or two) and yet TBBT was still two to three points up in Households. I'll get to the overnight demo and viewers when they come in. Tensor Week 01 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 20 September, 2016 Quote CBS ran the premiere of TBBT 10.01 The Conjugal Conjugate. It pulled in a 3.6 demo, with a 13 share and 15.44 million viewers. This was down, from last years premiere overnight numbers, by just under a point in Demo (4.5), a drop of 20% and down 2.5 million from last years viewers (17.63 million) a drop of 13%. This was down more than most expected. We'll see where it goes in the finals. The show was up from last years finale, three tenths in demo, a million in viewers. TBBT was number one in demo with that 3.6. In second was The Voice with a 3.3. In third was Kevin Can Wait with a 2.6 (interestingly, that was even with last years Life in Pieces, even with TBBT down a point), For viewers, TBBT was first with the 15.44 million viewers. In second was The Voice with 12.00 million viewers. And in third was Kevin Can Wait, with 11.15 million viewers. In the 18-34 demo, The Voice was in first with a 2.4, In second was TBBT at 2.1, and in third was NBC's new show, The Good Place, with a 1.6,. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.7 demo. In second, was The Voice with a 4.1, and in third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 3.7. I should point The Voice's demos (in all categories) are an average of it's two hours. In the 18-49 demo, it had a 3.0 during it first hour and a 3.5 in it's second hour. In the 18-34 demo, The Voice had a 2.2 in it's first hour and a 2.6 in it's second. In the 25-54 demo, it had a 3.8 in it's first hour and a 4.4 in it's second. In the half hour it was in direct competition with TBBT it's numbers were a 2.9 demo with 10.53 million viewers. The increase after TBBT theory brought it's average up. The finals will be up later, when I get them. Tensor Week 01 Final Ratings for Tuesday, September, 20, 2016. For Broadcasts, 19 September, 2016 Quote At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.01, The Conjugal Conjugate, brought in a 3.8, with 15.82 million people, up two tenths in demo and up (380,000) viewers from the overnights. This was still down nine tenths from last years premiere, and down 2.38 million viewers. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.8. In second was The Voice at 3.3 , even with the overnights. In third was the new show Kevin Can Wait, with a 2.6, even with the overnights. This was a pretty good premier for Kevin Can Wait. It had the same demo as Life in Pieces did a year ago, but with a point less lead in. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 15.82 million viewers. The Voice was second with 12.10 million, up 100,000 from the overnights. Kevin Can Wait was in third at 11.08 million viewers, down 70,000 from the overnights. This is the first time a premiere has finished below a 4.0 since season two. It dropped nine tenths from last years premiere, and dropped 2.3 million people. Last year's premiere dropped eight tenths from the season eight, but it increased viewers by almost 200,000 from season eight. Both The Voice and Kevin Can Wait were almost level with the second and third place shows last year, indicating the drop for TBBT was real. Tensor Week 01, Syndicated ratings, Wednesday, September 22, 2016 Quote Based on pre-season week , 5-11 September Top Ten in Households: Show Household Rating Judge Judy 6.8 Family Feud 6.2 Wheel of Fortune 5.4 Jeopardy 5.0 TBBT 4.7 Law and Order:SVU 3.6 TBBT Weekend 3.3 Entertainment Tonight 2.8 Family Feud Weekend 2.7 Modern Family 2.7 Top ten in 25-54 Women: Show 25-54 Women Rating TBBT 2.9 Family Feud 2.9 Judge Judy 2.6 Law and Order:SVU 2.1 Modern Family 2.1 TBBT Weekend 2.0 Wheel of Fortune 1.7 Jeopardy 1.5 Entertainment Tonight 1.3 Two Broke Girls 1.3 I've gotten the question as to why the 25-54 rating. For daytime shows, the women 25-54 is the more important ratings. As you can see, TBBT still does rather well with this demo. There is a also a show called Weekend Adventure. It is a group of nature programs broadcast during the day on weekends for kids. I've pulled it as it is not late Afternoon/early evening programming. Tensor Week 01, News, Info, and Answers, 22 September, 2016 Quote Low Ratings for Premiere, 20 September, 2016 Yeah...mostly...but there are if's and but's about it. If the ratings drop (and we won't know for sure or how much until we get several weeks more data), that would mean they could get less for the ads, which could affect how much CBS is willing to pay to keep it on the air. There has always been a vague "If the ratings hold up" in any discussion here of renewing the show. Last year, the show premiered to a 4.7, and finished the year with an average of 3.7. Here we have the show premiering at 3.7 (it should go there in the finals), which means we could see it drop to the upper 2s, as an average for the season. FWIW, I think it's going to stay in the low 3s for the yearly average. And, it's not so much declining viewers, it's that the audience is aging (which is to be expected of a ten year old show). Look at the breakdown in ratings. TBBT actually finished second to The Voice in the youngest demo (18-34), but TBBT beat The Voice by a full point in the 25-54 ratings. And although I don't get the 55+ ratings, I'm willing to be TBBT crushes The Voice in that particular demo. However, the add rates are based on the 18-49 (and if you have a large 18-34, that's even better). There comes a time in every shows life where it simply costs the network more than it can bring in during a television season. Sometimes, those shows are kept on for a variety of reasons. Think The Good Wife. That lost money, during each season, during it's last few years. But, it was a "Prestige" show, and CBS was able to keep it on because CBS controlled the rights to syndication. Which meant CBS could make back the lost money, during a season, in syndication rights. One of the problems with TBBT is that it has a large cast, who get a lot of money. And, networks pay most if not all the salary. And CBS can't make that money back in syndication, because Warner Brothers controls syndication. In addition to salary, CBS has to pay Warner Brothers a license fee. This drop could complicate the negotiations. Does CBS willing pay all the salaries? Does Warner Brothers cover some of that with backend for the actors? Does Warner Brothers reduce or eliminate the license fee? The last contract was mostly about how much CBS was going to be willing to pay the actors. Warner Brothers is going to be a much bigger part of the show staying on the air after a tenth season. I still think they get it done, but this does throw a bit more uncertainty into whether the show stays on past this season. Premiere Comparisons, 22 September, 2016 I know we've been talking about the low ratings for the premiere of TBBT. And, while it's undeniably a drop, it isn't the only one. Here are the premiere ratings, so far, for the half hour comedies, along with two other shows of interest. Both the viewers and demo are from last years premiere and viewers for both are in millions: Show demo viewers last year demo last year viewers. TBBT 3.8 15.82 4.7 18.20 Kevin Can Wait 2.6 11.08 New Brooklyn Nine Nine 1.1 2.89 1.5 3.14 New Girl 1.2 2.31 1.4 3.33 The Goldbergs 2.0 6.90 2.4 7.46 Speechless 2.0 7.38 New Modern Family 2.6 8.24 3.2 9.46 Black-ish 2.0 6.39 2.4 7.30 And two shows that are not comedies, but are usually number one in demo (Empire) and viewers (NCIS) Empire 4.2 10.87 6.7 16.18 NCIS 2.2 15.99 2.5 18.19 So everything is down. Hell, Empire dropped by 2.6 demo points and over 5 million people, which is three time the demo drop TBBT had. So, yes, TBBT dropped, but it still has the second highest demo of all entertainment shows, and the second highest viewers of all entertainment shows. So what's that mean for renewal. The biggest thing is simply the cost of production and licensing fees for CBS. If this was season three or even season 6 this would be a slam dunk, simply because of the lower salaries. *I edited in the final ratings for the Wednesday. The Goldbergs, Speechless, and Modern Family were even in demo and up about 100,000 viewers each from the overnights. Black-ish was even in both demo and viewers Empire was up a tenth in demo and 10,000 in viewers. One other thing I'll point out, the drop for TBBT was 20%, Empire was down 38%. TBBT Premiere Live + 3 Just some new info. In the Live + 3 for the premiere, TBBT picked up 1.6 in demo, and another 4.43 million viewers. This gives it a 5.4 demo and taking it over 20 million viewers (20.25). Last year, the Live + 3 increase was a 1.7 demo, with 4.29 million additional viewers. This gave it a total Live + 3 of 6.4 with 22.45 million viewers. There have been reports, in various articles, that it is the only show during premiere week to go over 20 million, but, the only Live + 3 data we have is for Monday. However, looking at the the other shows same day viewers and their normal Live + 3, I don't think any other show. While it has no chance to catch Sunday Night Football in demo (8.2), even for Live + 7, it has a very slim chance in beating it by picking up another 2.5 million. I don't think it will as that would approach the over 7 million it got for Live + 7 during Opening Night. I want to thank @vonmar for sending me a PM, pointing out the information above. There are times when I may not such information (I don't always see daily Live + 3, I get the weekly data normally), and I appreciate the effort in finding and passing it along to me. As I'm at rehearsal and on my phone, just a quick bit of news. Empire picked up 1.3 demo points in the Live + 3, to bring it to 5.5 demo. This is only a tenth of a demo point better than the Live + 3 of TBBT, at 5.4. Modern Family had a Live +3 of 3.8, what TBBT had for Live + Same Day. In viewers, TBBT is the only show over 20 million for live + 3. Beating both Bull, with 19.4 million and NCIS with 19.2 million. Empire finished with just under 14 million. Thanks M. Tensor Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Week 02; Week of 26 September, 2016 Week 02 Early Household Ratings and Top 25 Markets; 27 September, 2016 Quote TBBT ran the episode last night, 10.02 The Military Miniturization at 8:00 PM and it had a 10.6 Household Rating, with a 14 share (9.2/14). Compare to last week's premiere of 10.6/17 this was down 1.4 in Households and 3 share points. It also down 1.1 HH rating points from last year. In households, number one for the night was TBBT with that 9.2/14. In second was The Voice with a 7.7 Household and a 12 share (down three tenths in HH, even in demo) In third was Dancing with the Stars with a 7.5 Household and a 11 share (Down a tenth of a point in HH and even in share). From 8-8:30, while TBBT was on, The Voice had a 7.2 with an 11 Share, and Dancing with the Stars had a 7.3 with an 11 Share. I still don't have the Top 25 ratings, I'll put them here when they come in. I'll get to the overnight demo and viewers when they come in. Tensor Week 02 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 27 September, 2016 Quote CBS ran TBBT episode 10.02 The Military Miniturization. It pulled in a 3.5 demo, with a 12 share and 14.09 million viewers. This was down, from last weeks premiere overnight numbers, by just a tenth of a point in Demo (3.6), one point in share, and down 1.34 million. This was down minimally in demo and share, and only 9% in viewers. Due to the debate, we'll see where it goes in the finals. TBBT was number one in demo with that 3.5. In second was The Voice with a 3.3, even with last week. In third was Kevin Can Wait with a 2.7, up a tenth from last week. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 14.09 million viewers. In second was The Voice with 12.14 million viewers, up 140,000. And in third was Kevin Can Wait, with 10.94 million viewers, down 210,000. In the 18-34 demo, TBBT was in first with a 2.4, up a tenth from last weeks first place show. In second was The Voice at 2.3, up two tenths from last week's show. In third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 1.8, up two tenths from last weeks third place show. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.8, up a tenth. In second, was The Voice with a 4.2, up a tenth, and in third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 3.8, again, up a tenth. For the west coast, the post debate analysis was the lead in for the 8 PM shows. NBC had a 3.9 demo to lead into The Voice, ABC had a 2.3 to lead into Dancing with the Stars, and CBS had a 2.0 leading into TBBT. TBBT was the only show to increase from the post debate numbers. If, those demo numbers decrease, due to people leaving after the post debate coverage, The Voice seems to have the most to lose. Just for information, the debate averaged around 13 million on the big three networks, with a 3.7 demo (I leave FOX out, as most of the people who would watch FOX, would watch it on FOX News. NBC lead with a 5.4 demo and 16.6 million viewers. ABC had 3.1 with 12.6 million viewers and CBS had a 2.8 with 11.3 million viewers. The finals will sort all this out and will be up later, when I get them. Tensor Week 02 Final Ratings For Tuesday, September 27, 2016. For broadcasts, 26 September, 2016 Quote At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.02, The Military Miniaturization, brought in a 3.6, with 14.24 million people, up a tenth in demo and up (150,000) viewers from the overnights. This was down only two tenths from last weeks premiere, and down 1.62 million viewers. This was down only two tenths from last year's second episode, and down less than a million (990,000, I know, less by 10,000 ) In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.6. In second was The Voice at 3.2 , down a tenth from the overnights, and down a tenth in demo from last week. In third was the new show Kevin Can Wait, with a 2.7, even with the overnights, and up a tenth from last week. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 14.24 million viewers. The Voice was second with 11.72 million, down 420,000 from the overnights and down 380,000 million from last week. Kevin Can Wait was in third at 10.62 down 300,000 in viewers and down 400,000 from last week. In the overnights, I wondered if the large number of post debate lead in might hurt The Voice. As The Voice doesn't usually drop, it could have had that effect. Last week I mentioned both The Voice and Kevin Can Wait were almost level with the second and third place shows last year, indicating the drop for TBBT was real. This week, both TBBT and The Voice dropped the same amount this week and Kevin Can Wait actually went up from the third place show last year. For daytime shows, the women 25-54 is the more important ratings. As you can see, TBBT still does rather well with this demo. There is a show called Weekend Adventure. It is a group of nature programs broadcast during the day on weekends for kids. I've pulled it as it is not late Afternoon/early evening programming. Tensor Thursday Night Ratings, 30 September, 2016 Quote TBBT ran two repeats on Thursday night (there was no football game) Both shows pulled in a 1.4 demo, with 6.80 million viewers for the 8 PM show and 5.83 million for the 9 PM show. Here's the top five, from last night, for demo and viewers, and remember, all the others shows were being broadcast for the first time: Show Demo Show Viewers Grey's Anatomy 2.4 Grey's Anatomy 8.34 TBBT (8PM) (R) 1.4 TBBT (8 PM) (R) 6.80 TBBT (9 PM) (R) 1.4 Chicago Med 6.75 How to Get Away with Murder 1.3 The Blacklist 6.05 Chicago Med 1.3 TBBT (9 PM) (R) 5.83 Week 02, News, Info, and Commentary, 30 September, 2016 Quote TBBT Premiere Live +3 26 September, 2016 Just some new info. Thanks M. TBBT-Empire Live + 3 Comparison 26 September, 2016 As I'm at rehearsal and on my phone, just a quick bit of news. TBBT Premiere Live + 7 29 September, 2016 CBS released the Live + 7 for the premiere. It was up by 2.0 in demo and 5.7 million in viewers. This gives it a 5.8 demo with 21.52 million viewers for Live + 7. In viewers, this will move it to number 2 for the week, about a million behind Sunday Night Football and it will be the number one Entertainment program. As for demo, the show had a 3.8 for Live + same day, and went up 1.6 in the Live + 3, to 5.4. Empire had a 4.2 for Live + Same Day, and went up 1.3 for Live + 3, giving it a 5.5. TBBT picked up another four tenths between four day and seven day DVR viewers. I expect, at worst, TBBT will be tied with Empire in Live + 7, and it's possible that Empire will only pick up two tenths in Live + 7, giving it a Live + 7 of 5.7, leaving TBBT either tied or with, the highest rated entertainment show for the week. Answer to Question, 29 September, 2016 On September 28, 2016 at 4:29 PM, Vittoria Jacoel said: TBBT is always first in ratings! right? For most things Vittoria, I can say, no, it isn't always first. Even by most measures it isn't first, most of the time. If you mean demo, for Live + Same Day, Live + 3 Day, or Live + 7. It's Sunday Night Football and even Thursday Night Football that has been higher than non-sports programming for about three years now. Since last year, Empire has been higher in demo for all three measures, for non-sports programs. If you mean viewers, it depends on the week for either of the measures. Sunday Night Football, and even NCIS beats TBBT most weeks in Live + Same day. For Live + 3, Football is the highest, and it depends on the week as NCIS and TBBT have beaten football. For Live + 7 it's either Sunday Night Football, or TBBT, again, it depends on the week (for example last week, Sunday Night Football will beat TBBT by over a million viewers). Tensor Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Week 03; Week of 03 October, 2016 Week 03 Early Household Ratings and Top 25 Markets; 04 October, 2016 Quote TBBT ran the episode last night, 10.03 The Dependence Transcendence at 8:00 PM and it had a 9.1 Household Rating, with a 15 share (9.1/1). Compare to last week's show of 9.2/14, this was down a tenth in Households and up a share point. In households, number one for the night was TBBT with that 9.1/15. In second was a two hour The Voice with a 7.9 Household and a 12 share (up two tenths in HH, even in share). In third was Dancing with the Stars with a 7.5 Household and a 12 share (even in HH and in share). From 8-8:30, while TBBT was on, The Voice had a 7.4 with an 11 Share, and Dancing with the Stars had a 7.3 with an 12 Share. Those jumped to 7.9 for The Voice and 7.7 for Dancing with the Stars at 8:30, after TBBT was off. In the top 25 markets, TBBT was number one with a 3.6 demo, second was The Voice with a 3.0 and in third was Kevin Can Wait with a 1.9 I'll get to the overnight demo and viewers when they come in. Tensor Week 03 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 04 October, 2016 Quote CBS ran TBBT episode 10.03 The Dependence Transcendence. It pulled in a 3.4 demo, with a 13 share and 14.40 million viewers. This was down, from last weeks premiere overnight numbers, by a tenth of a point in Demo (3.6), one point in share, and up 390,000 in viewers. I expect it to increase at least a tenth in the finals. ETA: While TBBT generally adjusts up, it may not this week( and possibly down). While it wasn't on CBS nationally, the football game was on the Minneapolis CBS station, and those viewers will be removed from TBBT numbers. Normally it offsets, but we'll have to wait for the finals. TBBT was number one in demo with that 3.4. In second was The Voice with a 2.9/10, was down three tenths in demo and two tenths in share from last week. In third was Kevin Can Wait with a 2.4/8, down three tenths in demo and two tenths in share from last week. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 14.40 million viewers. In second was The Voice with 11.58 million viewers, up 560,000. And in third was Dancing with the Stars, with 10.57 million viewers, down 370,000 from last weeks third place show, Kevin Can Wait. In the 18-34 demo, TBBT was in first with a 1.9, down five tenths from last week. In second was The Voice at 1.8, also down five tenths from last week's show. In third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 1.3, again down five tenths from last weeks show. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.9, up a tenth. In second, was The Voice with a 3.8, down four tenths, and in third was Kevin Can Wait, with a 3.5, down three tenths. The finals will be up later, when I get them. Tensor News, Notes and Analysis, Week Ending 09 October, 2016 Quote 2016-17 Ad Rates, and Previous Season Comparison 03 October, 2016 This thread looks at the various ratings of TBBT. What we need to remember is broadcast television is a business. The ratings we see in this thread, translate into how much an ad costs, and how much money the network gets. This post will look at what those ratings are mean in terms of ad rates. We will be looking at the ad rates for a 30 second ad on various shows, for the 2016-17 season. I’ll list how this year's top ten did for the last three years. I'll also look at how the ratings compare to the ad rates to see which shows bring more value to their broadcast company. Unless otherwise stated, “spot” refers to the average cost of a 30 second ad. First of all, most of the ad rates are set at the “Upfronts” in May, when the networks trot out their new fall schedules. Most of the ads are bought “upfront” (hence the name) while a few are sold closer to when the show airs. Ad Age questions some of the companies buying the ads, and get an estimate on what it will cost to run a spot on each show in the fall. One thing to remember, these are ESTIMATES, of the AVERAGE cost of a spot. For instance, in 2013-14 season, the average price of a spot for American Idol was $356,000. However, near the end of the year, especially during the champion results show, the price can go much higher (in it’s heyday, it could pull in an spot rate of $1 million or higher). Of course this means that some of it’s other nights are much less. I used American Idol, but any competition show works out in a rather similar manner. For scripted series, the difference is much less. However, reruns command less money, and that is figured into the average. With that in mind, here are the top ten shows, as far as ad rates for the 2016-2017 season and the two previous seasons For 2015-16 Top Ten Ad Costs Show 2016-17 2015-16 2014-15 +/- previous Sunday Night Football 673,700 603,000 627,000 +70,000 Thursday Night Football (CBS) 523,000 464,000 493,000 +59,000 Thursday Night Football (NBC)* 485,700 N/A N/A N/A Empire 437,100 497,000 N/A -60,000 The Big Bang Theory 289,100 348,000 345,000 -59,000 This is Us** 272,000 N/A N/A N/A Modern Family 224,000 240,000 282,000 -16,000 The Voice(Mon) 240,000 274,000 286,000 -34,000 The Voice(Tue) 202,600 233,000 254,000 -31,000 Grey's Anatomy 193,200 157,609 149,000 +36,600 * This is the first year for Thursday Night Football on NBC. ** This is the first year for This is Us Here is what the Top 10 looked like the three previous years: 2015-16 2014-15 2013-2014 Sunday Night Football 603,000 Sunday Night Football 627,000 Sunday Night Football 594,000 Empire 497,000 Thursday Night Football 492,000 American Idol (Wed) 502,000 Thursday Night Football 462,000 The Big Bang Theory 344,000 The Big Bang Theory 317,000 The Big Bang Theory 348,000 The Blacklist 283,000 The Voice 294,000 How to Get Away with Murder 253,000 The Voice (Mon) 274,000 American Idol (Thur) 289,000 The Voice (Mon) 240,500 The Voice (Tue) 253,000 Modern Family 282,000 Modern Family 240,000 American Idol (Wed) 243,000 The Voice(Tue) 279,000 The Voice (Tue) 233,000 Modern Family 240,000 New Girl 237,000 Scandal 224,500 New Girl 236,000 The Simpsons 232,000 Blindspot 209,700 American Idol (Thur) 225,000 Scandal 207,000 Since advertisers mainly look at the 18-49 demo, lets do the same thing we did for the ad rates, for the 18-49 rankings and see how well they correlate (Note: I've only included previous years to see the trend. Ad rates tend to fall slower than the ratings, so there is usually some residual, show reputation thing going on. A good example of this could be found in the 2012-13 season. TBBT was virtually tied with Modern Family in Demo, it was pulling in almost three million more people. Yet, Modern Family was getting $55,000 more per 30 second spot. It was getting $331,000, while TBBT was getting $276,000, based on the previous years ratings (and also the Emmy buzz for Modern Family) , Based on the previous years ratings, it would cost $60,181 for a ratings point on Modern Family and $50,181 for TBBT However, by the end of the year, Modern Family dropped to a 4.9 demo rating and TBBT rose to a 6.2. The result of setting ad prices at the beginning of the season is that that $55,000 more per spot cost, ended with 1.3 rating points less than TBBT. Modern Family pulled in 12.31 million viewers, over six million less than TBBT 18.68 million viewers. This means that the actual cost 67,555 per ratings point for Modern Family and $44,516 for a ratings point on TBBT. Tensor Article on renewal negotiations, 04 October, 2016 SRAM posted an Interesting article, in the Cast, Crew, and TBBT news thread about the on going negotiations for additional Big Bang Seasons from Variety Tensor Wednesday Final Empire Ratings 06 October, 2016 The final Wednesday night ratings came in, and Empire finished with a 3.4 demo rating. This is a tenth of a point below what TBBT had on Monday (3.5). This is the first time TBBT has beaten Empire, in demo, when they both aired in the same week, since 2014. As a note, Modern Family had a 2.2 demo, this tied with Kevin Can Wait as the second highest demo for a comedy. As far as viewers, TBBT had 14.32 million, with NCIS pulling in 14.44 million. Based on the DVR viewing numbers so far this year, TBBT should move past NCIS and end up as the highest rated, and have the most viewers for all non-sports shows this week. While there was some consternation at the drop in TBBT ratings, for the premiere, compared to the previous year, other shows have dropped more in ratings or viewers. At this time, based on early season results (demo drop by Empire and viewer drop by NCIS), and DVR viewing so far, TBBT has a chance to be the highest rated, and most viewed non-sports show this year. The Big Bang Theory vs Modern Family series ratings, Friday 07 October, 2016 Since it's Friday, I thought I'd add this bit of research I did for someone. This past week, TBBT had a 3.5 demo for the show, while Modern Family had a 2.2 demo this week. There was a question as to whether TBBT or Modern Family has fallen further from it's ratings high. There is a difference between comparing the actual demo numbers for the show, and comparing the actual demo numbers vs the average for all shows, for that particular year. These numbers can be found, on the excellent website "Spotted Ratings" It just takes some digging into the charts they have, along with some calculations. For example, in season three, TBBT had it's highest actual demo numbers, a 5.26 demo average for the year. However, there were more viewers watching broadcast television that year, so it was easier for the show to get to that number. Since then, the number of viewers watching broadcast television has decrease, to the point where if you use the 5.26 demo in 2009-10 season (based on more viewers) the show's demo would only have been a 2.72 demo based on the number of viewers last year . So, I'm going to give you the drop based on raw numbers, and then the drop based on the numbers adjusted for available viewers. All the following are based on Live + Same Day. Here are the actual numbers for Modern Family and TBBT, with TBBT's season 1 starting in 2007, and the percentage increase or decrease: Season TBBT % MF % 2007-08 3.26 2008-09 3.79 +16 2009-10 5.26 +39 3.76 2010-11 4.00 -24 4.42 +18 2011-12 4.97 +24 5.05 +14 2012-13 5.25 + 6 4.23 -16 2013-14 5.07 - 4 3.54 -16 2014-15 4.32 -15 3.19 -10 2015-16 3.73 -14 2.55 -20 A couple of notes. That 24% decrease in 2010-11 for TBBT was when the show moved to Thursday, from Monday. TBBT increased by 55% it's first two years, while MF increased by 32% it's first two years. MF has double digits percentage drops since their high, four years ago. TBBT drop by 24% after the move, increased the next two years, and has dropped the last three years, only the last two have been double digit. We can use either 2009-10 or 2012-13 as TBBT high demo year (it's only a one hundredth difference) and find it has fallen about 1.5 demo points from either high point that would be about a 29% drop, since 2012-13. In the case of Modern Family, it dropped dropped 2.5 points from it's high, a loss of almost 50% of it's audience. Either way, Modern Family has dropped more, by almost a point in actual demo drop, and by 21% more in percentage than TBBT dropped. Let's compare those numbers, based on the decrease of viewers in the time since the shows high point. The average demo, for all shows, dropped from 2.21 in 2012-13 (TBBT high) to 1.46 for 2015-16 (last year), that's a 34% drop for the average demo, compared to only 29% for TBBT. The average demo dropped from 2.36 in 2011-12 (MF's high point) to, again, 1.46 in 2015-16 (last year). That is a drop, for an average show, of 39%, while Modern Family dropped by almost 11% more than the average show. How does this look, if you use the available viewers from last year, for all the yeas the show has been on. If you do, you get the following demo table: Season TBBT % MF % 2007-08 1.44 2008-09 1.84 +27 2009-10 2.72 +47 1.95 2010-11 2.29 - 16 2.54 +30 2011-12 3.07 +34 3.11 +22 2012-13 3.63 +18 2.92 - 6 2013-14 3.92 + 8 2.74 - 6 2014-15 3.74 - 5 2.76 0 2015-16 3.73 0 2.55 - 7 You'll notice that TBBT's high season now moves to 2013-14. This is because while it did drop in 2013-14, it dropped much less than the drop in broadcast viewers. You can also see Modern Family's only dropped three of the last four years (it even went up, although not by much). So, how does the drop from each shows highs look now? Well, TBBT dropped from it's high in 2013-14, of 3.92, to last years 3.73, a drop of only 0.19, and a percentage drop of only 5%. Meanwhile, Modern Family dropped from their high of 3.11 in 2011-12, to last years 2.55. A drop of over a half a demo point, and a percentage drop of 18% Again, both measures show Modern Family has fallen further and faster than TBBT. In fact, if you include this year (a small sample so far, I know) TBBT is at 3.63, a drop of only a tenth from last year's final rating (that's about 3%), and Modern Family is at 2.37, almost two tenths (that's about 7%) lower than last year's final. So Modern Family continues to drop faster than TBBT. I fully expect to see MF in the mid to upper ones, this year(probably in the spring), as I expect to see upper twos for TBBT in the spring. One other bit. TBBT has averaged more than twice the demo of the average show over it's entire run. Over the last four years, it has had a demo that is two and a half times better than the average show. Those four years are the highest comedy years, compared to the average show, since Friends went off the air. Using the comparison to the average show for the year, season seven of TBBT, was actually higher than most of Friends final year. What pulled Friends ahead, was it's absolutely monstrous finale that had a 24.9 demo rating (remember, TBBT was the high entertainment show last week with a 3.5 demo). Tensor Week 06 Early Household Ratings and Top 25 Markets; 28 October, 2016 Quote TBBT ran the episode last night, 10.06 The Fetal Kick Catalyst at 8:00 PM. This was it's move to Thursdays, and it had a 9.6 Household Rating, with a 16 share (9.6/16). This was up five tenths in Households and up two points Share, from it's last Monday showing. I will not be comparing the numbers for this week, with last week, as all the shows, other than TBBT are different. I'll return to the week to week comparison next week. In households, number one for the night was TBBT with that 9.6/16. In second was Grey's Anatomy with a 5.8 Household and a 9 share. In third, following TBBT was CBS' new show, The Great Indoors with a 5.7 Household and a 9 share. For the top 25 markets, TBBT was number one with a 3.6, up a tenth from it's last Monday Showing, Grey's Anatomy was number two with a 2.3 and in third, was The Great Indoors, with a 1.7. I'll get to the overnight demo and viewers when they come in. Overall, it looks like the move to Thursday didn't lead to a loss of viewers, and from the household and top 25, it may have went up a tick or two. Tensor Week 06 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 28 October, 2016 Quote CBS ran TBBT episode 10.06 The Fetal Kick Catalyst. It pulled in a 3.4 demo, with a 13 share and 14.41 million viewers. This was even in demo, but up 570,000 viewers from last weeks overnight numbers. While the demo was even, the viewers increased from the last Monday episode. I expect it to increase at least a tenth in the finals. As I did in the Households, I will not, for this week, be comparing other shows to the prior week, as with TBBT being on a different night, they are not comparable. TBBT was number one in demo with that 3.4. In second was Grey's Anatomy with a 2.2/8. In third was The Great Indoors, the new CBS show, running after TBBT with a 2.0/7. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 14.41 million viewers. In second was The Great Indoors with 9.25 million viewers. And in third was Grey's Anatomy, with 8.00 million viewers. In the 18-34 demo, TBBT was in first with a 2.0, down a tenth from the last Monday show. In second was Grey's Anatomy at 1.7. In third was The Great Indoor, with a 1.2. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.7, even with the last Monday show. In second, was The Great Indoors with a 2.9, and in third was Grey's Anatomy, with a 2.6. In general, the other shows on Thursday are not as strong as The Voice or Dancing with the Stars. So there seems to be a larger gap between TBBT and other shows. The finals will be up later, when I get them. Tensor Week 06 Final Ratings For Friday, October 28, 2016. For broadcasts, 27 October, 2016 Quote At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 10.05, The Fetal Kick Catalyst, brought in a 3.4, with 14.31 million people, even in demo but down 100,000 viewers from the overnights. This is almost exactly the same as last week's finals increase. This was down a tenth but up 110,000 viewers from last week, continuing the run of a 3.4-3.5 rating and 14.2-14.4 million viewers. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.4. In second was Grey's Anatomy at 2.2 , even with the overnights. In third was the new show The Great Indoors, with a 1.9, down a tenth from the overnights. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 14.31 million viewers. The Great Indoors was second with 8.81 million, down 440,000 from the overnights. Grey's Anatomy was in third at 8.17 up 170,000 in viewers from the overnights. As a note, the CBS affiliates in Nashville and Jacksonville both preempted TBBT with the NFL game. TBBT usually increases a bit, and these two preemptions are probably responsible for the lack of an increase. Last week TBBT hit a low, it hadn't hit since season one. A 3.0 for the overnight's, and it inched up to a 3.1 in finals. Something I mentioned later last week, was that 3.1, in the first season, was outside of the top 50 shows that week(For comparison, the 10th highest rated show that week was a 4.9). The 3.1, last week, was the number one entertainment show. Empire, the only other show to hit 3.0 consistently this year, was preempted due to the World Series, so TBBT being the only entertainment show hitting a 3.0 wasn't really a surprise. This week, TBBT was back to a 3.4. Empire, a show which has had a remarkable two year ratings run, was only at a 2.9, a series low for that show. As a result, this week it was a bit of a surprise that TBBT was the only entertainment show to break a 3.0 this week. The Voice was at 2.3, as was Modern Family. Black-ish hit a 2.0. That was it for non-sports shows over 2.0 this week. RETURN TO INDEX

Only first run episodes, for DVR viewing are available to me. Also note, this was Thanksgiving week, so quite a few shows were not first run that week. Premieres are designated with a "P". CBS ran a Monday repeat of the TBBT episode 0909 The Platonic Permutation at 9:30. It pulled in a 1.4 demo, with a 5 share and 6.37 million viewers. This was down a tenth and down 2.1 million from last weeks repeat. The main difference was this week's episode ran at 9:30, when there is generally less viewers available. The Voice was number one in demo with a 2.0/7. In second was a new episode of Kevin Can Wait with a 1.5/5. TBBT was in third with that 1.4. For viewers, The Voice was number one with 9.99 million viewers. Kevin Can Wait was second with the 7.17 million. And in third was TBBT, with 6.37 million viewers. In the 18-34 demo, The Voice was in first with a 1.2. There were five shows tied with a 0.8 for second, including TBBT. In the 25-54 demo, The Voice was in first with a 2.8. Quote As of Saturday, 12/31, I still don't have the finals. So, I'm putting up the overnights, and will edit this post with the final numbers when I get them. They are up. Remember, an "*" indicates a repeat, whether it is this week or last week. At 8:00 PM, the repeat episode of TBBT*, 9.22, The Fermentation Bifurcation, brought in a 1.7, with 9.23 million people. Even in demo and up 20,000 from the preliminaries. This was even in demo and up 1.4 million in viewers from the last week's show*. In first place, for demo, was TBBT* with that 1.7. In second, at 1.2, 1.1 was The Great Indoors* this was down two, three tenths from last week's number 2 show. In third was Mom* with a 1.0, down four tenths from last week's third place show. For viewers, TBBT* was number one with those 9.21 9.23 million viewers. The Great Indoors* was second with 6.27 6.00 million, down 1.4 million from last week's second place show. Mom* was in third at 5.51, 5.48 million down 1.8 million viewers from last week's number three show. News and Notes for the week ending Sunday, January 01, 2017 December 31,02016 Quote In response to this Article: http://www.breitbart.com/sports/2016/12/31/big-bang-theory-threatens-dethrone-sunday-night-football-tvs-watched-show/ You really have to be specific to claim being the most watched. Note they don't count the three SNF games before the season "officially" starts. But those viewing numbers don't really mean anything. Oh, they are nice for bragging that they have the most viewers, but advertisers look at the 18-49 Live + Same Day demo, and the NFL is so far ahead there, it's not a contest. That's why the NFL get more than $550,000 per 30 second spot and TBBT gets only $289,000. As for Live + 7; last year, SNF had a 7.5 demo rating, and TBBT had a 5.8. As a matter of fact, TBBT wasn't even number two last year, Empire had a 6.4. While SNF is way ahead again this year, TBBT has passed Empire in Live + 7. And, the highest rated scripted show beat SNF. The Walking Dead, a cable show, brings in a demo just above 9.0, but it's not counted in the broadcast ratings (although it does get around $450,000 for a 30 second spot. As for Broadcast Entertainment shows (notice the specificity), TBBT is the highest rated in Live + Same Day demo and Viewers. It finished second in Live + SD demo to Empire and second in Live + SD to NCIS. It has passed them both this year. It is also the highest rated Broadcast Entertainment show in Live + 7 demo and Viewers. Not bad for a show in it's tenth year. If you include cable, The Walking dead has a higher demo, in both Live + SD and Live + 7, but TBBT still has the highest number of viewers in both. January 02, 2017 Quote I just found some info* for the "Are more women than men watching the show" argument. This season, TBBT is sitting at 46% men, 54% women. Now, that looks like it's a show that more women than men watch, and if you are looking at raw numbers, in percentage, you would be right. However, television is usually dominated by women, and that shows up in where TBBT ranks in terms of where the women/men split falls. There are currently 96 original series on Broadcast, only 18 of them do men viewers make up at least 50% of the viewers. TBBT comes in 28th (out of 96 remember) with the most male viewers. Most of the shows that pull in more than 50% males viewership are either sports or comic book" dramas. Shows like The Flash, Supergirl, etc have a predominantly male viewership. Almost all the other shows above 50% are regular dramas. There are five comedies that pull in a higher percentage of male viewers. Three of those are animated (Family Guy, The Simpsons, and Bob's Burgers), all of those at 55% or higher. The highest percentage live action comedy show is Brooklyn 9-9, with 51% male viewership. The other live action show is New Girl, at 47% male viewership. Despite all that, TBBT has more actual male viewers (not as a percentage) than any other scripted show. It has 6.7 million male viewers, on average, every week. The only shows that draw more actual male viewers are Sunday night football(65%) at 13.2 million, Thursday Night Football (66%) at 10.4 million, and 60 Minutes (56%) with 7.2 million. So, TBBT pulls in the most male viewers for any scripted show on Television. I will now include The Walking Dead as it pulls in 52% male viewership, with 6.1 million total male viewers. These are the top five in actual male viewership. Just as an FYI, "South Park" has the highest percentage of male viewers at 74%, but with only 1.72 total viewers, it comes to only 1.3 million male viewers. *Data at Spottedratings.com RETURN TO INDEX

Tensor News, Notes, and Analysis for the Week ending 05 February, 2017 Quote In a discussion with Tripper,(You'd be surprised at how many ideas I get when I'm discussing something else with Tripper). Anyway, there were some comments, on the main site, complaining about how many repeats of TBBT are run. I did some checking to find a reason for all TBBT repeats. It basically comes down to the fact it is one of the few shows on now, that makes it worthwhile to run them. A few years ago, it was normal to run repeats and they brought in enough of an audience to make it worthwhile to the network. But now? Let's look. One reason for the repeats are simply there are many more weeks in the television season, than there are shows. 36 weeks vs 24 (at the max) shows. Different networks handle things differently. Fox and NBC tend to run drams for nine weeks, then take a hiatus, with a return in the spring. This year Empire ran nine episodes in the fall, and will return on the 22nd of March for another 9. CBS just runs TBBT repeats when they have an open spot. So how are all the shows doing. ABC has eight live action comedies. The following numbers are for seven of them (I'm doing Modern Family separately). These seven have a total of 27 repeats, with a high, in demo, of 1.2 and a low of 0.5. CBS has eight comedies on it's schedule. I'll get to TBBT below. So how do those other seven comedies on CBS do? They ran a total of 14 repeats, with a high of 1.2 (Mom) and a low of 0.6 (several). FOX's live action comedies have only run three repeats (from three shows), none of them getting over a 0.5 demo. FOX Animation (four shows) has run 12, with a high of 1.1 and a low of 0.4. NBC? Give them points for trying. They've run 14 repeats, off of four different shows, with a high of 0.7 and a low of 0.2. And, those 1.2s? There are only two of them. Out of 57 repeats, there are only 2 1.2s. So, next are the three most popular scripted shows, besides TBBT. Modern Family has the second most repeats run, with eight. They have a high of 1.3 (once) and a low of 0.7. This is Us has only run three, with a high of 0.8 and a low of 0.6. And Empire, the demo leader (non-sports) last year have run ONE repeat, and that was a 0.8 (Last year, they only ran four, and all, except one, were below a 1.0. The one that wasn't, was right at 1.0 How about TBBT? They've run 12, the most of any show. Their high is 1.9, their low is 1.2. There were 82 repeats by all other comedies (and two dramas). The highest was a Modern Family episode that hit 1.3. That's the highest, It hit it one time. There were two 1.2 demos, one by Mom and The Middle. None of the other 23 shows could get to a 1.2. The low for a TBBT repeat is a 1.2 (and it only hit that once), all of TBBT repeats are higher, they roughly pull in a 1.5-1.6 . So, the low repeat for TBBT is higher or equal to the high for 25 out of 26 other comedy shows (with two high rated dramas included). The average demo for a first run episode this year is currently a 1.38(it tends to go down in the spring). Modern Family repeats are the only other show , beside TBBT to average over a 1.0, at 1.01. TBBT repeats are averaging 1.52. That's better than the average demo of the majority of new episodes, from all the other shows, this year. Last year, CBS ran 24 repeats, and using the average demo for those repeats, it would have finished 52nd out of the over 120 broadcast last year. As I said, some networks run their series in fall and spring blocks. But, this doesn't affect how many shows they do. If CBS followed the other networks, there simply wouldn't be any TBBT repeats on TV between November and Feb-Mar (and fewer new shows). And why would CBS want to do that? CBS is getting a better demo with TBBT repeats (along with a pretty healthy number of viewers) than most new shows get, and repeats cost less to rerun. In terms of overall viewership? Viewing Levels on Friday and Saturday are the lowest of the week. I don't have the full HUT(Households using televisions). The best I can do is show the percentage of US homes tuned to Broadcast networks. Each Percentage point is equivalent to 1.2 million homes. As for people, that 14.7 household rating on Thursday, is around an average of 20.13 million people. Remember, these are averages, and individual time periods may have more or less than these: Sunday 11.7 (Sunday is lower as the CW network does not broadcast on Sundays. Monday 15.3 Tuesday 17.9 Wednesday 15.0 Thursday 14.7 The last three weeks on Thursday, with basically the same shows, have been: 23 Feb 14.7 16 Feb 15.8 09 Feb 16.2 As you can see, Broadcast viewing has gone down, for the last three weeks. With fewer households watching, there are fewer potential audience members. Quote On 2/24/2017 at 8:25 PM, serena_1995 said: Any particular reason why ratings for "Allowance Evaporation" and "Comic Con Conundrum" were low ? They scored around 2.8. Last year around this time the episode about Sheldon's birthday , Celeberation Experimentation, aired and it pulled 16 million viewers and a 3.8 demo rating. A drop of almost 1 whole point. Contrary to what @skull said, the 3.8 for last years 200th episode, was among a run of six straight 3.8 demos. Last year those six episodes also had an average of ~15.8 million viewers, a drop of over 2 million, compared to the last two episodes this year. There is only going to be one more new episode running before Daylight Savings Time starts. The history of the show's ratings shows that after DST starts, there is an average drop of three to five tenths of demo point, so we could be looking at demo ratings in the mid twos, for the last five or six episodes this year. Now, even with this being said, the show is still number one for non-sports shows at 3.29 for demo (although the last two weeks have brought it closer to Empire's 3.21 demo, which comes back on the air in March). So we'll have to see how things go. It's also currently number one for viewers in Live + 7. However, again, the last two weeks have brought it down closer to NCIS. Current trends would have This is Us taking over the highest demo for Live + 3 and Live + 7 on a weekly basis, although the yearly will be between TBBT and Empire. For viewers, it will be between NCIS and TBBT for all three measures (Live + SD, Live + 3, and Live + 7) for the year. Final ratings will not be available until Monday. Sorry for any inconvenience.
