Comparing Shows

I think the greatest similarity between That's 70 Show and TBBT is in the characters of Fez and Raj. When I first watched TBBT I thought Raj was too much like Fez. An awkward foreign guy, whishing for a girl but not good with them, meterosexual with gay jokes made about him and a bromamce with his friend... Fez is more childish and has this love for candy and is not a genious but still, that bothered me.

I'm hurting no one; I'm not blowing things up, or stealing children. I'm doing this because I "see evidence." I'm doing this because it's fun. I've read all my books, played all my games, learned the piano. I'm just trying to pass the time.

True. But that doesn't bother me as much as when the Harper brothers pretended to be a gay couple. I mean...they're brothers. Ick.

Nope, you are not hurting anyone, neither is anyone replying to you, refuting your claims.   If you claim to see connections, there is nothing wrong with that.  However, there is also nothing wrong with pointing out flaws in how you arrived at your claims.    As has been pointed out, there are connections to all shows, as shown by quick read of any page on tvtropes.

Look, I jokingly made a reference to smoking Rickys in both I Love Lucy and TBBT.  But that means nothing, even though you seem to think it means something.  In I Love Lucy, the smoking Ricky was a human, who was one of the titled stars of the show.  In TBBT, it was a monkey, who wasn't really even smoking (it was CGI'd).  Which means there really isn't any kind of connection.

Do you require everyone, in both shows, to have different names, for the show not to have a connection?   You recently mentioned how Eric's cousin is named Penny.  Unless you can show that Prady and Lorre specifically named Penny after Eric's cousin, the names are not connected, other than they are the same.  You want a connection, look to West Side Story.  That's nothing more than Romeo and Juliet, set in New York.  Random lines or names or minor plot points are not connections, they are simply coincidences, and have nothing to do with if a show is original or not.

Now, if you can show the characters consistently reacted the exact same way, to situations, then you could say a show is unoriginal.  The problem is any show after the mid 50s would be unoriginal, if you are using random lines, names or plot points, as you are doing here.

Out of curiosity I watched about 10 minutes of "best moments" of That 70s Show just now. I have come across this show on tv before but never watched a whole episode. I have seen every episode of TBBT and watched many of them multiple times. For me That 70s show just does not come across as interesting or compelling so any comparison is kind of irrelevant.

You had mentioned Star Wars references so I checked some out. :resent:Kind of lame I think.

This scene is more akin to the Family Guy Star Wars parody than anything in TBBT.

Very lame! I like most of the characters, but the script itself is terrible. When I do watch it, I always fast-forward through their daydreams and wonder, What were they thinking?

Donna and Amy both wear Catholic schoolgirl uniforms (although for very different reasons).

Donna sprays Hyde and Jackie with a water bottle (Magic Bus) just like Sheldon does to Leonard (Gothowitz Deviation). And WOW! I already mentioned Leonard's cousin "Leo". Season 10, there's a Theodore! Just like in that episode of That '70s Show with the contractors, Leo and Theo. Also what kind of name is Theodore? It sounds like a Christmas elf.

Four more, just since last night.
The Big Bang Theory has Stuart Bloom, whereas That '70s Show has Stew Bailey. There's a Mrs. Riley in both shows. Both shows include mention of at least two characters going to see a performance by Barry Manilow. And they both include a rude Santa.
I'm not even trying anymore to find similarities; they're just all over the place. I don't even know if I mentioned this one, but Hyde and Amy both watch Little House On The Prairie, and Randall and Leonard both want candy and flowers from a girl.

1.) Raj and Fez both say "Screw you, that's funny!"

2.) Bob and Howard both spill milk out of a pitcher during a magic trick.

3.) Howard puts a wig on a skeleton sitting in a rocker, while dreaming of his mother's demise. In Donna's Story, Red assumes Bob will be sitting in a rocker with a lady's wig on his head.

4.) Donna and Amy both write stories about themselves as medieval women, incorporating their boyfriends into the plots. (That's my favorite similarity!)

5.) They both dressed up as Justice League!

6.) In both shows, the word touche is used literally, during the conversation or event of fencing.

7.) Red wants to watch Bob Newhart on Carson!!!

8.) Kitty and Penny both drink Peppermint Schnops.

9.) Red and Sheldon both hate when people whistle.

10.) Kelso competes for a van, and the nerds of BBT compete for a ring. In both shows, the winner is the last one holding on.

11.) Raj eats Funions, too.

12.) Jackie tells Kelso to restore the balance of their relationship by kissing another girl. Leonard dreams Penny kisses Sheldon to restore the balance after he cheats on her during his North Sea expedition. (Not like the balance was out of whack; she was always loose.)

13.) Eric and Raj are both afraid of butterflies.
