Most of the characters had a sad upbringing.

Not Raj lol. He was raised in a wealthy family. Leonard definitely had the most saddest upbringing. Sheldon second. With his father leaving him and his mother. Or did he die? Not too sure. Can't say Penny had that sad of an upbringing. Seemed pretty typical. Howard definitely with Leonard the saddest upbringing out of all the characters. We don't know much about Amy and Bernadettes backstory. To know about their upbringing. We've at least seen Bernadettes parents. Amy just Skype with her Mom.

Well most of them have flaws (one could say damaged in regards to some characters, not a big fan of that term though) or quirks and your upbringing can play a huge part in that.

We know a little about Bernadette's backstory, from The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary.

We know, for instance, that her mother wouldn't let her ride a bicycle, and that, even though she's an adult, her mother treats her like a child, putting out her clothes (even though she doesn't live with her parents), and calling her to check if she had a healthy lunch.

As for Amy, we know her mother was super strict with her, locking her in closets when she was young, pressuring her to date, shave her legs, etc.

We also know she had no friends when she was at school (beside the Janitor), at college, and while working for her Doctorate.

He died when Sheldon was 14.

His Grandfather died when he was 5.

I'd say Penny and Raj are the only ones to have a really good, trauma free, childhood.

Beverly can bring Penny to tears hypothesizing about how her father wanted her to be a boy. Still, Beverly is a demon who can make anyone feel small and inadequate.

I think Leonard probably (and sadly) "takes the gold" on this. Followed by Howard and Amy (even though we know very little about her past).

Penny's doesn't seem so bad but you have to wonder what makes a girl start "dating" at preschool and be, apparently, quite promiscous at highschool. I know these were jokes but still, they gave the impression that she was very much preoccupied with boys from a very young age. What kind of masseges did she get from her surroundings? Was she tought, directly or indirectly, that pretty girls should be concerned only with going out with boys? That's kind of sad, not a continous trauma like Leonard's childhood but still sad.

I agree.  Sheldon, at least, has a truly loving parent.

Yes, Penny said she had a "wonderful childhood" before Beverly got to work on her. So far as we know Bernadette had a perfectly normal family childhood, it was just that when she was no longer a child her mother was slow to recognise that - altho' that seemed like a one-off joke so she could hit it off with Howard. Howard apparently had a happy childhood until his father deserted the family. Altho Sheldon's father was unsatisfactory, he had a good mother with whom he still has a close relationship, and all his childhood problems came from their East Texas society not being able to accomodate a Boy Genius.

Leonard's upbringing is a comic theme in itself. Beverly is a wonderful creation, and seems to make the "Tiger Mother" look like a pussy cat.

Amy had  the worst childhood IMO. It seems that her mother is actually crazy. Obviously A has been badly affected.

Incidentally, Leonard appears to be the only one of the 6 Americans who hasn't risen in class compared with their family backgrounds.

You mean other than the illegal day care center her mother used to run in their basement, and having to take care of her brothers and sisters,  with their snotty noses and poopy diapers?
