Which Sheldon Do You Prefer

  1. 1. If you could pick one, which would it be?

    • Sheldon 1.0; The character seen in Season One through most of Season Four. There were some changes and modifications but he was essentially the same character.
      12
    • Sheldon 2.0: The character seen in all subsequent seasons. Probably up to permutation 2.8 by now...

Sheldon 2.0 , especially from season 9. Because robot Sheldon was funny in beginning but imo it would be just boring if he still be the same after all these years, as the storyplots about him really improved as he improved and evolved.

Personally I enjoy more stories whose characters may change  for good reasons. Especially these ones who must challenge themselves and Sheldon is really a good exemple of challenge himself due his life's changings.

Jim Parsons  won multiple  Emmys and a Golden Globe for his older portrayal of Sheldon  for a reason  -atleast to me-  I could definitely see why he won from a personal comedic standpoint. Can't say the same now.  A pity.

So without doubt,  the older portrayal of Sheldon felt more iconic and just  funnier to me. Give him anything under the sun- from Virtual Presence Devices,  graphene atoms, bongos  to flatlands, tuvan throat singing, number 73 or the "tall man from Cornwall" - he made it all work including the one-of-a-kind take on interpersonal relationships like the  social curiosity with Amy in Herb Garden or the frenzied reaction to the Napkin gift ending in a hug.

I think, my favorite Sheldon was from season 2-6 - a bit of both Sheldon 1.0 and Sheldon 2.0.In fact post season 7, i feel the entire show has gone down in quality , Sheldon included. The writing has deteriorated and individual jokes often feel stale. Not even a contest .

S 1-6 Sheldon defiantly. They've thrown Cannon out the window so much With Sheldon I dare to care for. Much like the Show Sheldon has deteriorated. And has become vapid

I think you would expect most ppl hate Sheldon. Because he's changed too much.

Not really. Imo changes dont mean most of times for worst and in Sheldon's case I think they were for better. Course many won't agree with me as what they expected was Sheldon being the same as the others characters envolved and made progress in their lives. If that happened surely I would not be here talking with you all.

From my point of view, Sheldon in season 2 is the rawest and purest form of the character. Before the show knew where it was going, when they were shooting from the hip and they didn't know if they would go beyond 3 seasons. There was more energy in the writing and effort in every plot and many more laughs for all the characters. For Sheldon, it was the moment something special happened. He just became this epic being. So different and so exciting. So for me, it's definitely the earlier shows, although there's some good stuff in some of the mid-seasons as well.

I don't think the show would have been allowed to stay around this long without some change being made. He was an acquired taste and I wish he'd stayed that way. Sadly I think they couldn't let go and neither could we. So we've kind of squeezed the life out of Sheldon and there's more squeezing to come with the prequel.

I hate always being so negative but I just don't see Sheldon anymore. The problem is no one will remember the original Sheldon, they'll only recall the bratty one. They'll only talk about how he changed for the better but that will never ring true to me because the show just became all about fixing something in him that was just so perfectly flawed it was great how it was. They took out the good bits and kept his worst traits in my opinion.

I see Sheldon quite differently. From my prospective out of the gate in season one we at times had a brilliant obsessive compulsive loner and at other times a big immature baby (The Luminous Fish Effect). I found the awkward loner more funny than the big baby.

I don't think the show has gone down hill. To the contrary I think it has improved. It finally lost the fat jokes creepy Howard and most of the sleeping around.

I was glad to see the back of all those too. I'm not too pleased with what has been revealed of Raj as we've got to know him. The way the others have developed as they've settled down with their life mates is very believable and acceptable to me. Sheldon had several faces, as do most of us.  I like the way he has been growing  up. The earlier Sheldon is still recognisable in the maturing one but I'd like to see him realise what an ass he could be when younger and show regret for it.

I, too, agree with all of this.  I find Howard's character MUCH more appealing now that we don't get the fat mother jokes, which I always hated.

Sheldon will always be a work in progress.  I guess that's kind of what is intriguing about him.

I wonder how many thought Howard would have a life like this? I certainly didn't that's for sure.

I have really enjoyed and loved watching his journey though life so far, I can say that for pretty much all of them :)

One of the things I like about the show is that despite all the smart ass put-downs, the show is, ultimately, about friendship and tolerance.  They realize Sheldon is 'different' or, as Leonard said, "broken." And Leonard is broken also and admits he needs to be needed, as he did to Professor Proton.  [Perhaps that's something the show could do with Penny and Leonard - show that for all her street smarts, she needs him for something, and not for money.]  They take in friends [this includes post-Leonard/Penny marriage with Sheldon] Stuart, Raj...The show features a lot of 'broken' people if you include Howard and Amy.   Bernadette and Penny and to a lesser extent, Raj are the ones with more functional childhoods.  None of them have stopped wanting the approval of the others.

ETA:  My local station just showed this episode!

I'll definitely go with option 2 but I don't agree with the labels. If you take for example one episode from s1 and one episode from s10 and compare them, Sheldon will look like two different people but that's a false comparison because that's ignoring all the episodes in between. If you look at the whole series, Sheldon's changes are gradual and make sense because they're the result of his experiences. IMO he's changed for the better cause now he can express his feelings to his loved ones and seek their company more easily.

And what we got are screeching mean Bernadette, wore her down Lenny, stalled Raj, and a manipulative Sheldon who now knows what he is doing, instead of being innocent and in between that we got a harpy, sex-starved Amy.

Number one, NUMBER ONE. Yes, I do think there was a gradual change 1-6, well, and some part of 7, I was up for it. But it was a change, all in the shades of spectrum of one's self. I'd say. What's after that, that's not a change, that's turn. Maybe now I would be up for the Aquamen statue hitting him on the head, you know, to end this sad meaningless suffering of  once beloved TV character (I'm watching way too much of Walking Dead right now).

From mostly proud content, confident chararacter, with peculiar (or obnoxious?), unique mindset that with all the immanent characters sparkled the screen with it's own never-been-seen-before stamp of comedy. To an empty shell that's being filled with once, three knocks. There... some child like naivity, some snark comment here and there - it all rings so hollow.  Being so little, changing every other week. Who's Sheldon really right now? In five words, what would sum up his persona? I have no idea.  If we insist on calling his journey a "change" than I, not believing what I'm saying Am calling this incredibly fast one. So much so, it seems to me like even writers needed more time to catch up, since they seem sometimes so lost of who Sheldon is right now. What he stands for? What his beliefs are, his goals, his characteristics? Seems like whatever is currently needed in a script.

Surprisingly I don't think it has to do that much with Amy, as I'm reading in threads many times. I think their relationships was one of the funniest and best developments done on the show. Not just in season 4 even while I like them there best. They were both just enough similair and just enough weird and unique in their own way, to make the audience laugh, and their relationship work. Now, watching them, it's more like who's the one I'll feel pity for this week? and thankfully, rooting for them once in a while. Now I see Amy more like the one who has this dreadful job of being dragged along for Sheldon's "this week" journey. Being everything from poor doormat to confident woman and loving girlfriend, being one hundred and one shades of Jekyll and Hyde.

I'm used to rolling my eyes when everbody goes around telling how the earlier series of probably every show on a planet are the best. The first three seasons, behold, The Holy Grail. I don't feel like it. I  admit I fell in love with many shows way after it's "peak," but in this case, nope. The early series were better. And Sheldon? Early Sheldon is for me, the best.

I like that the characters evolve, in fact I dislike when they keep them unrealistically stagnant (like they have been doing with Lenny for more than a year now, IMO). However, when rewatching the early seasons I feel Sheldon was much sharper then. I agree this is not because of Amy. They could have kept his intelligent dialouge, that Jim performs so brilliantly, while keeping him in a relationship. The quality of his lines is should not be dependent on his relationship status.
