Stephen Hawking Posted August 13, 2017 Posted August 13, 2017 Well, that was a really hard decision, but I went with Opening Night. Next one is a far easier decision for me.
3ku11 Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 (edited) Well Bath Item came back strong. It's currently 151 votes each. Very close. Bath Item is winning now 157 votes to 153. Edited August 14, 2017 by 3ku11
luminous Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 (edited) "Bath Item" is a good episode from the old days, but somewhat overrated for me in retrospect. It has some nice Leonard/Penny moments towards the end and is probably best remembered for the "Saturnalia miracle" of Sheldon hugging Penny. But frankly, I don't like Penny in this episode. She more or less fell for David Underhill in the moment she saw him and completely disregarded Leonard's feelings. Having sex with a guy, she just met and didn't even bother get to know...oh well. Of course Penny had every right to act like this. Obviously she did not yet consider Leonard as "boyfriend material" at that time. Penny showing up in the cafeteria of CalTech with David Underhill must have been like a punch in the gut for Leonard, considering that he had offered to show her around before and she always declined it. And all the things David Underhill said about Penny. She being "curious and agile in other respects", (In other respects...yeah, we know what that means) or he working on an experiment with Penny exploring "the effects of tequila shots on a gorgeous 22-year-old woman" and Penny answering "It’s not an experiment! You saw what happened last night." Poor Leonard! And when Leonard asked Penny..."Okay, I have just one question for you. While I am perfectly happy with the way things are between us, you said that you didn’t want to go out with me because I was too smart for you! Well, news flash, lady, David Underhill is ten times smarter than me! You’d have to drive a railroad spike into his brain for me to beat him at checkers! Next to him, I’m like one of those sign-language gorillas who knows how to ask for grapes! So, my question is, what’s up with that?" ...I really would have liked to hear her answer if she had not discovered that David Underhill was married, when he tried to take nude photos of her. Apparently she even already saw herself in a relationship with David Underhill, as she spoke of herself as his girlfriend. I know, Leonard was with Dr. Stephanie before and at the beginning of season 2 both Leonard and Penny went out with other people after their first date, so the writers were still fully into the "will they/won't they" mode for them, but...I don't know...as I said, I don't like Penny in this specific episode. Overall it's a good episode, but it's not one of my favorites. Edit: Everything IMO of course. 3ku11 Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 I saw it differently. While the DU plot can be bad for Lennys. It was so important in the long run. Typical story Penny meets a hot guy. Falls hard. And then eventually is let down. The story was huge for Pennys character development. It was the first time she grew to appreciate and love Leonard. So yes Penny was a cow to Leonard most of the episode. But it was a necessary evil imo. It was the first time she's outgrew dumb gym guys. Well in this case DU was not dumb lol. And started to realise the nerds. Particularly Leonard we'll always be their for her. Combined with how good they were back then with combining charcater development and humour. The great superman dialogue. And the iconic napkin scene. I understand why particularly for Lennys why story wise it's not a fav. Personally it's all my all time from the series. And we'll always be. Most of the time. Ppl remember iconic moments and scenes from a series. Not the story. Hence why Bath Item has always been so popular. HeWolf Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 Opening Night is a pivotal episode for the Shamy, but Bath Item is, and always will be, classic TBBT for me.

Perhaps he viewed Penny as a temporary fling and wasn't concerned with her finding the photos of his wife on the phone. TBBT has come a long way since the days of Bath Item and there's nothing to be gained by rehashing the old "Did Sheldon accurately characterize Penny's dating habits?" debate. Penny in those days was into a specific type. Big, muscular, jock types, or at the very least, pretty boys. Dave Underhill was only an anomaly in that he was intelligent. Otherwise, he was perfect for Penny at that point in time. Edited August 15, 2017 by HeWolf

3ku11 Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Well looks like Bath Item is going to,win. Currently has a 36 vote lead. The right episode won imo. I do remember ON won th episode tournament last time. So,we'll get a new winner this time . Hopefully it's not Long Distance lol. Adhesive Duck clearly the superior episode. Bath Item v Adhesive Duck in the final seems likely.
3ku11 Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Well Bath Item won. Voted Adhesive Duck. Easy choice.
Stephen Hawking Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Kinda bummed that Opening Night lost. The current round is an easy decision. The final is going to be a tough one, if Adhesive Duck wins this round.
bfm Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Adhesive will be my choice for the next two votes.
HeWolf Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Adhesive Duck should trounce LDD. The Shenny parts of AD are some of the best ever TBBT. Nothing in LDD compares.

I expect that will dramatically change during the season but so far during the hiatus (when the tournament takes place) the activity isn't that much different. So the handful of us Shamy fans currently here are a bit more chatty in our thread but we're not, like, massive in numbers or anything. The only reason I bring this up is because your earlier post sounded like you suggested the ratio of Lenny vs. Shamy fans on here is somehow an explanation for the many Shamy episodes in the final top 16 this year. As I've said earlier, I think it's probably just a question of who Tripper reached with his tournament advertisements outside of the forum. Would you look at that, we only had one taping and the Shamy thread is already leading by a substantial amount of pages over the two Lenny threads... Sigh. Current TBBT is not much of a draw for Lenny fans. (This is not related to our previous discussion, I just remembered these comments seeing how active the Shamy thread is)
luminous Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Voted for "Adhesive Duck". BTW, this episode reminded me how awful the german dubbing is at times. One example: original: Penny: Is that my arm? Sheldon: It doesn’t feel like an arm. Penny: Then, maybe you should let it go. german dubbing: Penny: Ist das mein Arm? (Is that my arm? ) Sheldon: Fühlt sich nicht an wie ein Arm. (Doesn’t feel like an arm.) Penny: Dann nimm deine Hand da raus. (Then take your hand out of there.) Really? Out of there?

Out of there? haha Do you only have a dubbed version? no subtitled version? Here foreign TV (and movies) is mostly subtitled (actually much of the local TV and movies too, which is nice if you missed a word). Only cartoons and some filmed shows for very young children are dubbed. Still, I have learned to completely ignore the subtitles. They have mistakes that annoy me (they even write Hofstater, come on!) and when they don't it doesn't always give the same vibe/feel that the original sentences give, it is translation after all... They also shorten sentences some times, probably to avoid having long sentences running fast (the picture I posted today in the non-season 11 discussion thread is an example, Penny says "Amy, get the hell out of here!" but the subtitles read "Amy, get out of here."). I have the blu-ray's of TBBT (seasons 1-9), which include the original and the dubbed version plus optional subtitles in different languages. In addition I also have access to TBBT on Amazon Video and Netflix, where I can also choose between original and dubbed version. When I watch it on TV I only have a dubbed version. Interesting. When I visited European countries I noticed some filmed teen shows that were dubbed (and are not dubbed here) but I didn't think this habit includes shows for adult audiences too. I wonder if there are other countries where subtitling prevails. Local TV (and movies) is also subtitled here most of the times, makes it easier to catch up if you didn't hear something. Sometimes an engineer must press the wrong button because they run episodes dubbed in Spanish. I can't understand much of it but it is interesting to hear the characters speaking Espanol...
