Tensor Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 TV back then wasn't must see TV either, that was simply a marketing ploy by NBC. I only saw episodes of those three sporadically, as I really had no interest in any of them. There were also people who thought Seinfield, Friends, Cheers, wouldn't stand up to the the shows in the seventies and eighties. TBBT still brings in around 20 million viewers in a week. Only two to four million less than Friends. While Friends was three to five million less than a show like Cosby , in the mid to late eighties, which was four to six million less than All in the Family in the early 70s. TBBT, this past year had right at 19 million viewers, on an average week. This would have put it in the top 10, in 2003-04, the last year of Friends (it would have finished eighth). And this after an almost 50% reduction in viewers over the last ten years.

I guess it was "must see TV" back then in the sense that you didn't have the convenient modern options to catch up with an episode if you missed it live but that's about it. But in terms of raw numbers TBBT doesn't have to hide even today. I remember you played a bit with the numbers last year accounting for the drop in total audience numbers which shows even more how incredibly stable TBBT viewership is compared to other shows and the market overall. In the end that's all that matters for CBS.

And GH's career somewhat contradicts her character's remark: her only real star performance in her 20s, IMO, was in There's a Girl in My Soup, where she played a very Penny-like character. Her other comedy/romantic heroine successes started in her 30s - slightly older than Penny is now. I can't agree with this. She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, and was nominated for a BAFTA for her role in "Cactus Flower", when she was 24.

They made an ANTI-Comic Con episode this season where the main characters decide not to go because they are "growing up" or facing "grown up issues" . If their fans had thought similarly , not many would have come to their TBBT panel either. The plot showed a reality for some people who feel as they get older, they should stop to do some things they used to enjoy as they could be seen as kid's stuff. Personally I dont agree as I think there are no age for people enjoy to do whay really please them but it was a nice take imo about what growing up does to some people 's hobbies time. I think it has nothing to do with tbbt cast and crew 's interaction with the fans of the show in CC though.

Even if half of them stayed home they'd easily fill the panel. SDCC is hopelessly overrun with people these days.
Spaced_up Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 (edited) This is a Lenny in pain (unfunny I spotted an old post but its just as relevent now). I know I'm the last person to say this to an opposing ship, but the Lenny ship has never been given primary position. They have thrown scraps to Lenny. They didn't even bother to establish the romance in the early days, they never gave them a connection, a passion, a shared goal. They never explored how they could work long term. How Leonards gentleness could be of benefit to Penny, they just played on his weakness. And this is the very reason why Shenny existed. I feel sad for them, I know the ultimate dream of Sheldon and Penny and all the beautiful oddball moments is lost, but most of all I feel nostalgia for this wonderful show. We all loved it for different reasons and I have expanded my idea of what that means. It means so many different things for all of us. I don't really think so, for me the people that were at the panel today could have very easily identified in the plots of that episode. Sometimes you just had a baby, and you have to skip the Convention, or you find a solution and manage to go anyway, sometimes all your friends are busy so you decide to go alone, or maybe to stay home, sometimes you take your SO with you, sometimes not. That seems pretty common to me...

When he first appeared they casty him as this introspective yet clever man, with his own business yet struggling. Now they have him as a freak of nature who wouldn't say boo to a goose. It's a recon, I'm sure if kevin had the cash he'd tell them to stick it. :D I love Kevin too since I watched "Sweet home Alabama" . I wish his Stuart could become a more interisting character and less creepy. Kevin's sense of comedy is great imo.

I always thought it would be kinda cool if they explored Stuart as a sensitive comic artist more. He is someone who would have a good aesthetic sense . There are so many guys(and girls ) who are into comics and geek culture who don't have a PHD or are scientists . Not every character needs to have the predictable marriage/babies happy ending either. Stuart could have made sense as his own individual. jokes about suicide/depression are not very amusing to me especially on a show like TBBT. I agree, but there are just so many characters already, a deep dive into Stuart would be impossible in the current BBT reality. I kind of wish that they had portrayed him a little differently from the beginning.

He even got Penny to go out with him (which I could never figure out why she did except to be a catalyst for the Lenny romance) But now he is characterized as some creepy hanger on. Capt. Hilts Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 I love that she has a passion outside of performing, but - given her previous injury - I wonder how her contract addresses her horse-jumping, etc. I know that back in the day some movie stars - Spencer Tracy, for one - were forbidden in their contracts from playing polo, so he played under a different name. Tensor Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 She rides under a different name, but it's not all that big of a secret (how can it be, even I know it), and it was more for the paps, so I can't see her contract limiting what she can do. Although I guess I could see a salary forfeiture for any missed time, due to riding her horses. Johnny has said that he quit riding his street motorcycle (he still rides his dirt bike on his...ranch for the lack of a better word). In his case he said he realized that there are a lot of people depending on him (other cast and crew I would imagine) to be riding in the LA traffic. We all loved it for different reasons and I have expanded my idea of what that means. It means so many different things for all of us. Except for the part about not establishing a common goal for them I disagree. First, I think early on there was clear romance and an emotional connection that got stronger over the time. Second, about Leonard's "gentleness": What about the Haloween party when he didn't take advantage of her? That was for her good. And what about all those times he was there for her to support her? And let's look at what happened later on - he agreed to wait for her to be ready for commiting, taking it on her own pace. How many men would do that? I think many men facing Penny's issues would have pressured her and dump her. Also, I don't think it has to benefit her directly to be an advantage for him. Personally for me kindness and compassion are major turn ons. See the whole cousin Leo thing...yes it was a lie but it showed that Penny is attracted to kindness, to Leonard being a good friend. You can also see it in her reaction to him saying that they should offer Raj to move in with them. Now the weakness thing...I think TPTB are overplaying it and it has gone much worse in later seasons. I think it may be like self humor for them so they don't sense that they're exaggerating. However, even with his weaknesses emphasized Leonard is and has always been the (quiet) leader of the group. Remember what happened when he dated Priya? The group followed. Also this year you could see that Howardette and Raj come first to Lenny. Amy's relationship with the girls has developed and she is no longer "the weak link" but still, Lenny are the glue that connects this trio to Shamy and not only because of Penny. Also, it takes strength to deal with Sheldon almost 24/7 for about 13 years. Which brings me to my next point: Are you implying that Sheldon is "strong"? And more than Leonard? Umm...huh? While Sheldon has his benefits he has many difficulties and is dependant on others, previously on Leonard and to some extent Penny and now on Amy. I hope you'll have a lovely wedding! Best wishes of a great wedding with lots of happy stuff to you and to your so Regards tbbt s 11, I am looking foward to the whole tbbt fan package: spoilers, taping reports, the discussions here about them among everyone, etc. How will be the beginning of the season: at present moment, flashback, or a jump to the future? Will Amy say yes, say no or say maybe? The Hiatus seem never ends, lol! Isn't the taping day yet? What I am mostly waiting at the moment is as @April said, interviews or some teasing about s11 in any shape or size. I wonder why this silence after SDCC, it is torturing everyone, lol! Anyway, looking foward to reading your thoughts about the premiere when you will be back online. As for the new season, I'm looking forward to it and a bit disappointed we haven't heard anything specifically referred to S. 11 at SDCC. The panel was fun and I actually didn't expect any spoiler during it, but I was sure after that there would have been some interviews with Molaro and Prady which could have given us some hints, not on the cliffhanger, obviously, but on the other plots. I hope in the next season tptp start again to speak with the press and to advertise the show. Last season I thought they decided to go low profile because of the negotiations going on, but that took a lot of fun away from fans...
