I think they really need something  for Penny to do,. I think Penny is (or used to be) probably the second most popular character after Sheldon. At the very least, the character is  one of the more popular ones. So I think they are under-utilizing her. There were some Penny-centric episodes like Barbarian Sublimation and maybe  some others in season 6, but I think there are few of those. The last good season they focused on Penny was in season 7 with her quitting cheesecake factory and her acting career. After season 8, they just kinda gave up IMHO. Lately there has been very little going on for her own stories(there are  stories to tell other than wedding and babies).

Have to agree  Maybe this episode with Bill Gates may lead to a change in her position at the pharmaceutical company

He wanted to "play this guy, who seems to have a future of romantic triumphs and difficulties".

Would that mean Jim Parsons as Leonard? Cause that would be too weird...Glad it worked out the way it did.

If Johnny got the part if Sheldon, I don't think Jim could have pulled off Leonard. The show would have never made it.

Of course that's my opinion and I could be wrong.  :icon_biggrin:

I am pretty sure Back in the day They diddn't just tell stories about Penny being a waitress. But tbh this current crop of writers have been stagnent, complacent, and non creative since 2013. They are not suddenly going to start writing quality stories for Penny.

Poking around the internet and I found this.

Was this a new attempt by Bill to convince the writers to bring out more balanced stories. :shy:

Is Sheldon going to eat all four pies?

These friends were a lot like Penny in the early years. Looking for that one night stand. She grew out of that phase and graduated into a more meaningful lifestyle. After being with Leonard, she still went to bars on girls night with Amy and Bernie. got free drinks then came home. It was boring, but she was true to her man.  :icon_wink:

I think she does enjoy having a drink at a bar with Amy and Bernie. They are her true friends. She doesn't seem to care about flirting with handsome men anymore, at least not very much. When they went to a strip club she was busy studying, barely took a look. When they offered a stirper/strip club (I don't remember which option) she said if she wanted to see a naked man dancing she would flush the toilet wheb Leonard is in the shower LOL. So it's not very tempting for her anymore. She goes to bars to have a drink with her dear, true friends.

Great post! Totally agree! As I have said before it has been so long since Penny had a plot that is about her, where she is the leading force. The Gates plot is not much about her and is just a one time thing. She is severly underutilized, IMO.

The reason Jim got second billing was that of the original plot about two science nerds sharing an apartment. Sheldon was Leonard Roomate.  Johnny was the most well known of the original and had been on a hit sitcom that made him a household name. That why he got top billing.

EXCELLENT resume of the situation. I think this is it.

Am I the only one who thinks they will say, "Okay, now we've done something related to Penny's job so people who wanted us to do that should be satisfied" and move in another direction again?

Apparently they (writers) can't write about anything except Shamy getting married or them interrupting Lenny. What ever is good for Shamy is good for the show.

I feel there are several here who whole heartedly agree with your above statement.

If we are talking TV Acting then I would say Mayim is the most experienced actor of the whole cast. Johnny would be second

The Blossom episode with Johnny and Mayim is one of the only ones I watched all the way through. I was not a huge fan of Blossom although I watched a bit at the end.

I think that sometimes she goes for a drink because she's exasperated at something Leonard or one of the other guys says or does something stupid. She's only out to have a drink with the girls.

I think you're right. I think that's what they're going for, but on one level it bugs me. Personally I think it's time to be done with the idea that Penny can't cope or have a good time unless there's a bottle of wine in front of her. They even had one in front of her at Bernie's house when they were waiting for the baby to be born. And the big Lenny moment this season involved her having to be drunk to express her feelings for Leonard. Penny supposedly having a drinking problem is not funny anymore. I can't believe I'm the only one who's tired of the Penny drinking jokes. I can see them taking Amy out for drinks for her shower, but that's a special case.

I can't agree more. Penny drinking is not funny anymore. One day, hopefully the writers will understand this simple idea.

It's been a while though since she has gotten really drunk or even tipsy. That scene you're talking about was a flashback. I kind of get the feeling that she likes her drinks but doesn't go too far anymore.

I think with the improved job comes the more mature attitude concerning drinking. I believe she enjoys a nice glass or two of wine after work and maybe with her posse, but remembers the bad effects of those daunting hangovers.

Totally agree with you  However cannot help to think that maybe this plotline with Bill Gates will lead to a position change at the pharmaceutical company for her. Am I being too optimistic for the writers to create this?  It would certainly be a breath of fresh air for Penny.

Can actually say that I never saw a moment of Blossom.  It just was not on my radar.  Also the same for 8 Simple Rules.  Being a big Kaley fan, I am shamed to say I still have not seen a second of the show.

I did however watch Roseanne back in the day and was a huge fan of the David character.  I also love, love, love, love the movie Garden State and nearly lost it on Sept. 24, 2007 and I saw Jim as Sheldon.  My wife has memories of my screaming "it's the guy in the suit of armor from Garden State" along with "ha!!  get it??  Sheldon and Leonard....like Sheldon Leonard?  You know, Nick from It's a Wonderful Life???" (she would have no clue if I tried to explain how he was a huge TV producer.  The It's a Wonderful Life reference was much more relatable for her).  She in turn rolled her eyes in the perfect Penny Hofstadter manner......

It's almost been 11 whole years and they haven't got the message as of yet. Although she's not a drunkard as much, but Sheldon still gets a jab at her occasionally. So my hopes for the writers to get that particular notion is limited. At least they could have Leonard defend his wife. But then that's not comedy.

Look at me, quoting myself. What else can happen today?

And also older age and a stable, loving relationship.

I'd put an anything can happen Thursday (although it's probably not Thursday for anyone here right now) gif for you but I'm weak on the gifs.
