It may well be something they won't reveal. The only reason for bringing it up was that I thought it was one of the things Holland referred to when saying there are things they've been repeatedly asked about. He said some of those things will remain a mystery.

I agree with your original post @bfm . It was just my perception that folks may have thought maybe only Leonard knew her last name only because he picked up her mail (again only my perception). I think TPTB at some point decided it was clever for Penny not to have a last name. It appears that they used Sheldon’s meltdown during their Las Vegas wedding to avoid disclosing her now “maiden name”.....

Right after meeting Penny Howard found her topless movie scene, he had to learn her name then and all four of the guys were there at the time so they have known her last name since the beginning.

We can safely assume the gang all know, it's just the audience who dosent

Don't they use only first names in weddings?

Full names are used frequently in proposals but Leonard always said just Penny haha. He only used her last name when it was already Hofstadter and he asked her to stay married to him.

I think it depends. When my wife and I were married (back in the Stone Age!) we used our full names. First, middle, last. E.G.: I Leonard Leakey Hofstadter take thee, Penny ______ _______. Or I Sheldon Lee Cooper ,take thee Amy Farrah Fowler....I have heard vows like: I Leonard take thee Penny...Again it depends I think.

That's how my wedding was. We used first names only. Like you said it all depends on the couple getting married. As for Penny's name being in the credits of the movie, she could have used a stage name. Saying the gang knew her last name is very debatable. Leonard, I can see knowing since he got her mail for her, both when trying to find a way to talk to her and when she went to Nebraska to visit her family.

Imo tbbt had been a bit ambiguous about Mary and George marriage as sometimes it seemed they lived together although the marriage issues and other seemed they might have lived separated but no divorced.

I don't think they lived together. I think they just had sex. I got the impression they had George very young. And again, I see no evidence that they separated, only that he slept with someone else, which you don't have to be separated to do. If this comes up on YS someone please let me know.

As for Mary and sex, she has said she had a wilder past as a young woman and Sheldon caught her sleeping with the guy from Bible study, so she seems to be a cafeteria Evangelical. She picks and chooses what she believes.

That's not a wild past. That just happened I think season 10 or 9. When you talk about wild past, I think that is when she was married as George Sr.

In the most recent episode of YS, Mary had dinner with Georgie while Missy was out with her dad and Sheldon was spying on Meemaw and Dr. Sturgis. We found out that Mary was pregnant with Georgie before marrying George (although she bent the truth a bit to keep Georgie from finding out for sure).

Your term “cafeteria evangelical” seems to fit...

That's the case at every wedding I've ever been to but on American TV they use full names.

Here the full names are published beforehand, however, for three  or four weeks in most cases. Details are put on noticeboards in the registrar's office and/or read out in the churches of the parishes where they live . This is called reading the banns. The purpose is to give the public time to object if there is an impediment.

This is so funny and ironic because I've always pictured that William Shatner would be revealed as the landlord at the end of the series, and when the guys find out, they ask him why he's never repaired the elevator, Mr. Shatner says his been busy in the comic con circuit because of fanboys like them.  And Sheldon, being Sheldon, says he will let it slide because he's the captain, but he still prefers Sir Patrick Stewart, and it would be cool if he could get his DNA.

Also in the episode "Fetal Kick Catalyst" when Penny is invited to a comic-con for "Serial Apist"  I tried to see if her name appeared in the poster behind her because she was single when she made that film but they conveniently did not show her name.  RATS!

As much as I would love to see her maiden name, I'm just sure that the writers and TPTB have moved on in this topic and is no longer an issue to them. She is now Penelope Hofstadter and I think she finally learned how to spell H-o-f-s-t-a-d-t-e-r!  I'm willing to bet Leonard taught her the correct spelling, as she needs to sign that name now.😊

I wonder if her maiden name is Wyattson ? That would make her father  Wyatt Wyattson. Some parents like to do that to their children, such as John Johnson, Jack Jackson, Magnus Magnusson, Robert Robertson, Cuthbert Cuthbertson.

Wyattson is one weird name. Almost as bad as Leakey.

If it's Roberts or something like that it would explain why Penny quoted her mothet calling him Bob (S2) and then he's Wyatt haha

I think Penny's dad is named Robert Wyatt or Wyatt Robert. I'm afraid we don't know his last name either. I think that they are the only family in the world that doesn't have a last name. They can't call them Hofstadters too. 😉
