Not yet, Suppose to be a Tropical Storm with winds between 60 and 65 mph. That's just below a hurricane of 74 mph winds. We're gonna get winds and heavy rain. Probably lose power as well. I've lived since 1993, so not my first rodeo. We'll just be prepared and hunker down and wait for the storm to pass. One of the worst things about tropical storms/hurricanes is the waiting. Besides that the all you can truly do is prepare your house (and yourself) in the best way possible, and then hope for the best....

Besides that the all you can truly do is prepare your house (and yourself) in the best way possible, and then hope for the best.... After last year, I now have a new roof, new hurricane doors, and a new hurricane garage door. My house is concrete block, and my windows were/are Miami-Dade rated (a 2 x 4 at 145 MPH will crack the window, but it won't shatter it). When they redid our roof in december, they added a second pair of anchoring straps. my joists are dual anchored to the concrete blocks. I now also have an emergency generator to power our fridge and air conditioner, for about six hours a day. That's enough to keep both our food and ourselves cool enough. To everyone in the path, stay safe.

Tomorrow will be interesting now the winds are up to 65 mph. My thoughts are with the people in Ellicott City, Maryland. They got almost 10" of rain and the streets are flooded. Carlos
Here in Miami we had lots of rain during the morning and up to about 2:00 PM and there were tornado warnings for some neighborhoods of the tri-county area (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties) but there weren't any issues (as far as I know). chucky
I say, so far Alberto is boring. Suppose to drawing aim at us and all we have in rain is a few sprinkles. I mean we barely got our grass wet yet. 😊 But, the worst is on it's way for later today. 😔

This is gonna be a very dangerous storm according to news reports and officials at NOAA and Weather Channel. It should definitely be taken seriously. It looking like it could be a repeat of Hugo. Please people follow orders and leave if you are told to and get out of harm way. For everyone who deicing to stay and ride it out, STAY SAFE PLEASE!! Don't put your life or someone else in danger. It may I not doubting that but I have a feeling Florence is gonna be a real b**ch come Thursday-Saturday. Female Named Hurricanes are on average more vicious and devastating. Tensor
Interesting note, instead of Florida, where I would be safe, I am now in Virginia, waiting for the storm with friends. Fortunately I'm in the extreme western end of Virginia (where it narrows down to a point) so we expect rain, but not destructive winds. Not to mention we leave on Saturday, heading west then south, so we should be fine.

I've already seen several people on the news who plan to stay in their houses. One guy said he would rather stay home than in a hotel. My first thought was wtf? He not gonna be any safer. I don't understand people who stay and ride out a storm like this. A Tropical storm I guess I kind of understand but not a Category 4 or 5 Hurricane or even a Category 3 for that matter. You know I was just thinking, United States is the only country on earth that experiences almost every major extreme/major Weather event imaginable from Volcanoes, Mudslides, & Earthquakes (okay it not a weather event but I including them), Hurricanes, Floods, Blizzards, Tornadoes, Wildfires, etc,. We get it all it seems. Edited September 12, 2018 by MTBigBangTheoryFan

A Tropical storm I guess I kind of understand but not a Category 4 or 5 Hurricane or even a Category 3 for that matter. It's gonna depend. I would have no problem riding out a Cat 4. But, then, I'm at 40 feet of elevation and about 3 miles from the nearest shoreline, so I'm not in an evacuation zone, as far as flooding goes (My mortgage company doesn't even require me to have flood insurance, though I do). As for the winds, I have a concrete block house, my windows and doors (including the garage door) are Miami-Dade rated (they'll survive a 2 x 4, traveling at 145 mph, yes my windows will survive that), and I've cut back any and all trees that may fall onto the house and I have a new roof. The problem last year was the wind took advantage of some insect damage, to rip half the roof over the den off, all that (wind, insect) has been repaired, As for afterward, I have two generators with 20 gallons of gas that would keep my fridge (and computer and phone)going for a couple of weeks, and enough propane to cook with for just as long. Now, if it's a Cat five, or I'm in a flood zone or I'm on a barrier island, or a mobile home, id be leaving

But I stayed during a Cat 3 and ran from a Cat 4. I guess because a Cat 3 is just a hurricane and a Cat 4 is a "major" hurricane. That little word "MAJOR" scares the hell out of me!
