[Spoilers] Shamy: Season 12

And Kathy Bates didn't play the mom the way Amy seemed to describe her anyway. The mannerisms of the first actress, as short as we got to see them, seemed to bear that out more.

Counterpoint: Kathy Bates played her perfectly the way I imagined her from Amy's ever increasingly weird stories about her mom and the first actress' performance matched those stories less and less to the point that I and many others (from what I have seen) had a hard time reconciling the two.

Of course, the issue is that back then Amy was just in a few episodes and they barely sketched out her character, let alone her mother's.

I agree; the actress from S. 4 seemed to me an innocuous lady, probably an overbearing and old-fashioned mother, but I have hard time thinking of her putting her daughter in a closet as a punishment. Kathy Bates, on the other hand...seems born for the part, LOL!

I like the idea, born of fan fiction, that the 'mother' Sheldon first met online was a neighbour pretending to be her when Amy chickened out at the last minute of having the real one meet Sheldon.

Nice solution!

Well, yes, that is an excellent point. Quite true.

I assume it would also depend on how you see Kathy Bates. I can't remember anything I've seen her in aside from The Late Shift, Titanic and an episode of Two and a Half Men and another one of Third Rock from the Sun. She was amazing in The Late Shift

Kathy Bates is one of those actors that have been in a gazillion things. Personally, I loved her in Six Feet Under.

The parents of the characters on TBBT have all been GREAT.

The producers have done a GREAT job of casting them.

I really miss seeing Raj's parents on Skype.

Kathy Bates keeps that tradition going.  They should have an episode with only the parents.

Indeed. Amy could have been a character whose appearance would be in a few episodes in a simple characterization and would be all. However as much Amy was interacting with Sheldon, more she grew on audience. Excuse me for repeating what I have said before but I think  Amy was indeed the perfect creation from writers for Sheldon Cooper. Even today we know many things about Amy and we simply want much to know more as she is so fascinating and attractive, mind speaking as a good neurocientist just would be. Our Sheldon only could fall in love and embrace a few changes in his life for share his live with Amy. Never get enought of this warm fan feeling ❤

I totally agree.

Many characters in TV shows have taken off with the audience and become far more important that show runners thought they would. Spike on Buffy is a perfect example of that, but in a drama, not a comedy.

Yeah it's clear the hints of 'puritanical' parenting style when it came to her mother was a major source of gags back then when she was first introduced and to try and explain why Amy was the way she was and used as a way to enhance her interactions with Penny and Bernadette (having Amy desiring what the other girls had/experiences growing up, but she was restricted or some might say sheltered from).

Obviously, they then toned down some of that as Amy became more of a fleshed out character and they had other material to go on.  If I recall there were actually very few references to her mother and her strict parenting in later seasons (obviously there was that episode in Season 9 with the penis shaped cookies, ear piercings and a call to her mother lol).

So when they finally introduced her mother (in the flesh) I was extremely interested to see what she was like, whether she was more like early season references or the more recent fresher in the memory ones and I am not surprised it was the latter.

I think it was the right call, you can see she is very protective of Amy perhaps too much so I can totally see some of the references over the years including a sin closet being perhaps a little true (and her giving Amy an ear bashing over the aforementioned 'penis shaped cookies' and getting her ears pierced lol) but I also got the impression she cares about her daughter a lot as well.

I think they simply nailed it, the portrayal feels very real.  Don't forget Teller, it was genius using his 'quiet man shtick' and implementing that in the show by having a wife that doesn't let him get a word in lol.

I hope we see more of them, for example I would love to see them on FWF especially after they told her mother and her subsequent reaction that she does online videos/podcasts in the season finale, it could be a comedy gold mine lol.

Maybe they can work around that a bit. The Sin Closet thing could be something that was meant to be a few minutes time out but her mother fel asleep or something so it lasted more. Not good, definitely, but not as terrible as intentionally locking her daughter for hours.

TBH, I am surprised that Amy's parents could come back this soon, for years, I've wanted to see Amy's family, and now, finally they are here and IMO, they are wonderful and interesting and funny characters.   Based on the scene from 1124, when Amy's Mother talked about Amy, I thought she was very IC - as in from Amy's perspective. I think she loves Amy very much, but is really overprotective. So I can see the sin closet thing happening.  On the contrary, the lady from S4 didn't give me any "crazy vibe", not like Kathy Bates of course. Kathy Bates's version is more crazy and strict, not only to her daughter but to her own husband. And that was one of the funny plot in 1124.   And, now, the most I want to see is Sheldon, talking to his in laws, alone. I want to see JP interacts with Kathy Bates and Mr. Teller. Oh and please writers, give Mrs. Fowler a first name, please.

I want to see Sheldon speaking with amy's parents too, that didn't happen at all during the wedding episode...but not sure that is what is happening in the premiere either. Apparently shamy are on their honeymoon and the Fowlers for some reason interact with the rest of the gang...kinda weird, if you ask me!

How is it weird ? I've interacted for various reasons with the parents and aunts of unrelated women to whom I've been bridesmaid, and the grooms' parents and the best men.

Also, look how Shamy interact with Penny's mother-in-law. We know  Penny knows Amy's family well enough to talk about them and to speak to Amy's mother on the phone. They all know Bernie's father at least, know Sheldon's mother well enough to phone her and knew Howard's mother.

TBH, I want to see them interact with Sheldon or Shamy, not the gang. But I'm happy that Shamy is on their honeymoon, which reminds me of Chandler and Monica, I love that couple too.  Hope to see some interesting plots about Shamy's honeymoon. TBH, I never thought I would see these plots such as wedding and honeymoon happening on the screen, but I'm grateful.  So, never say never I guess.

I think it's weird because  the Fowlers don't seem to be as in confidence with the rest of the gang as the other parents in the examples you mentioned. I don't see them coming from Glansdale to visit amy's friends when amy is out of town...but we don't know enough about the episode to judge.

It might have something to do with the apartment...them checking on something or dropping something off. It could start the minute Shamy leave for the honeymoon, or later. The interaction could only last for a day, or it could last for several days. We don't know. Or could something have happened so that they could not get home, weather delayed flight or something like that, and they needed a place to stay and the hotel was booked up so they stayed in Amy and Sheldon's place? There's a lot of different ways they could go with this. We have no idea yet.

Unusual perhaps because we don't know how well the others know them, but under no circumstances would I call it weird. When a daughter gets married there is a link to the bridesmaid  - and best man if they're married to each other. Glendale is not a long way away : Amy seems to have been able to go there and back in an afternoon at Thanksgiving. I agree they wouldn't want to visit the gang. They probably drive over to drop something off and borrow a key. Soon, maybe even next week, we could be getting instagrams and then we'll have more to speculate about. I can't wait  to hear about the tapings  after that - is anybody we know going ?

We’ll be trying to get tickets for Sep 18th, that’s the fourth show/taping 😊

I am still hoping that they’ll wrap up the wedding and show us some parts of the honeymoon.

Given the fact that we’ll get to see two TBBT shows in premiere week this seems likely. We know that Holland didn’t give too much content away at CC but I personally think that the “special” episode they’ll be showing in premiere week will be about the wedding. Well I shall personally hope so 😊

Which wound mean that the second episode will be about the honeymoon. What do you guys think?

It's weird because it's unusual with these specific characters (meaning: Amy's parents). We haven't seen them hang out with the gang in any capacity (remember: until recently we didn't even know Amy had a dad!) so it's curious that they apparently start bugging them for some reason all of a sudden while Shamy are away on their honeymoon, no less.

With other parents like Beverly there's an established relationship already so it's not like "Shamy spend time with the bride's mother in law" but rather "Shamy spend time with Sheldon's friend who happens to be his best friend's mother". They have an established relationship here that started when Beverly showed up back in the day and it turns out she and Sheldon instantly formed a bond that lasts to this day. There is no such bond between Amy's parents and any of the gang to our knowledge.

Weird and unusual is kind of the appeal of TBBT

There wasn't much of one so far as we know but there is now ! The bride's parents and her maid of honor ( or whatever she's called in other countries ) have a bond forever. She's  probably going to be their grandchildren's  godmother if they have one.  Every relationship starts somewhere. That is not a weird one. In Shamy's case the wedding supporters and potential godparents are a married couple. I have a relationship with  my godchildren's  grandparents from the wedding onwards if not before it, and I promise I'm not weird.  The Fowlers may be strange people, all three of them in their ways, that can't be denied, but weird is a bit strong unless it means something else across the pond. Of course, they may behave in a weird way when the episodes are forthcoming but that remains to be seen.

One can only imagine Shamy with teens...

...8 simple rules perhaps....

...or maybe more like Jumanji (sort of how I felt taking my four to grandma's house)
