Is There a Chance for a Big Bang Theory Spin-Off?

The Big Bang Theory's bittersweet goodbye will begin on Monday night, September 24, when the long-running sitcom kicks off its twelfth and final season. The announcement to end the series—which was made earlier this month—took fans by surprise, but there's some hope: Though the series as we know it will come to an end in May 2019, Executive Producer Steve Holland is open to a potential spin-off. If the stars align, of course.

In the meantime, the premiere episode will include the return of Kathy Bates and Teller as Amy's parents, among other cameos. And Sheldon and Amy's honeymoon, with trips to Legoland and New York City, is also in the mix. Lots more is in store for the final season, like Penny and Leonard's decision about whether or not they will have children and Raj's love life. So, we caught up with Holland to discuss all of the above and more. Read on.

Thanks @vonmar.

On the Lenny front this is confusing. On the one hand, he says they are going to discuss whether or not to have kids this year, which sounds like it won't be one and done (although it can be one - might not want, two - don't want, but the second one would be quite boring this way), but on the other, he says he agrees with Kaley about Lenny not having kids and says it's an interesting thing for a character to do (and that it wasn't done before or something like that, which is actually stupid because it was done, for a very short moment, in this very show). Maybe they will end up with a dog ><

Also kind of disappointed that the solution to Penny's unhapiness with her job seems to be "she's getting the PR position so she will be more happy now". They could have done actual plots centering on that instead of just comments here and there.

I'm a bit sad that he said Molaro, Lorre and him were talking about an idea for the ending, I would like for Prady to be very involed as he co-created the show along with Lorre.

So onvious. Also very early. Episode 1.5. Those feelings of attraction don’t happen ivernight. The seed was planted at “hi”.

Leonards intial attraction to Penny was purley superficial. But their clearly was more depth between them. Than just Nerdy guy wants Hot Blonde. Around Hamburger Postulate. It was the episode where I knew this was different to the Atypical Boy meets Girl Cute. As emphasized in S2 Finalie. Typically as you saw in 80s movies. The Hot Blonde is dating the Jock. Than end of the movie, she suddenly see's the nerd that was right in front of her the whole time etc. But their were obvious signs  it was mutual, pretty early on.

My point was originally though. IS that I don't think this Lenny pregnancy plot line. Is that big of deal. I woulden't want a storyline where Leonard puts pressure onto Penny. For something she's either not ready for. Or just not comfortable with. Kinda like he did when he told Penny he loves her for the first time. He kept badging her about it. And that did not work out for Leonard did it? Hahahaha. So I wouldent be surprised to see this story resurface. As along as they are having mature conservations. And if they do decide to want kids. Later down the line. It is a decision they both wanted. Not Penny changing her mind, just to make Leonard happy.

That interview means nothing.  The baby/job situation wasn’t solved in 12.3. I’m not sure why Holland is patting himself on the back. The storyline ended with Penny’s father and when viewers see the episode it will get a big laugh. Nothing groundbreaking there.

Interesting, I wonder what kind of spinoff he might have in mind? I would check out any project, though some on paper seem more feasible and likely to work than others.

It will be interesting to see if this idea picks up momentum and leads to something.

Neither did I. I saw a stereotypical nerd blown away from a stereotypical bleached blond with big boobs. It was one of the things I did not like about the show. I quit watching for a few eps then had to play catch up.

And the writers made some major changes in Penny's personality about four episodes in.

The Penny of Episode 1 didn't last long.

I agree with that she probably get the PR job. Getting the job though IMO won’t be the solution. There is the reality that Bernadette is the real reason she got the job. Also I have a funny feeling she won’t like the job. I just think by the end of the season two things might happen.  One is she will somehow get back into acting. Two there will be a reason she will want kids. Something will happen that will change her mind.

That really goes for every character on the show.

I think they taped the episode from last week out of order, or there is a scene in it not filmed during the taping. Holland said Jerry O'Connell is will be back episode 4, but the TR didn't mention it. On the other hand, at SDCC, it was said the episode with Tam was 12.5.

I'm wondering about this, too.

Also, I don't recall anything in the TR about Sheldon's efforts to become a friendly son-in-law.

If it's how you see it, that's fine.   Pretty much how I didn't see any chemistry between Sheldon and Amy.

Amy herself said there was nothing when she tried holding Sheldon's hand after he'd taken her to see Zack.

Yeah I Think the chemistry between Sheldon and Amy earlier on. Was purley intellectual. In a way it was like Amy was experiencing her hormones for the first time. What i got from S4, is that Sheldon and Amy did not seem to have any romantic interest in each other. Alot of that was controlled by Sheldon.

When they were at that stage Sheldon seemed more like a friend when he was with Amy than with anyone else. The 'friend who's a girl but not my girlfriend' made him comfortable. They had a friendship chemistry that came over on screen well, I used to think.

Stereotypical nerds are people too. Blondes with bleached hair and big boobs are also people. They are allowed to dream, even stereotypically. TBH  - in the show - Sheldon didn’t even such dreams. He has had to learn that it would be beneficial and gratifying for him to partner up.  Left to himself he might not have arrived where he is. I’d be grateful to Leonard for the social training and the modelling example. And don’t  worry, the show treats Leonard and Penny as sacrificial anodes for the corrosive jokes anyway. They aren’t that much loved by their creators.

Both being intellectual has nothing to do with chemistry

That plot was announced in a TV Line article. I think a lot of people mistakenly thought that it was the plot for the third episode, because the announcement was made the same day as the taping and we didn't have a taping report right away. However, that story-line is not featured in episode three. Steve Holland even said that Kathy Bates and Teller would be back again in the season, presumably for the episode where Sheldon tries to befriend them, although he didn't specify when exactly that would take place.

Not exactly. Chemistry can exist in various forms. My point was Shamys Chemistry, Dynamic, Relationship etc. Was purley Platonic in S4.

I agree that Penny will probably offered the PR job she covets.  I also think like Chrismo something will happen to make her want to have children. Maybe a false pregnancy or pehaps she babysits the Wolowitz children and realizes that maybe she is ready and does want children.

Thanks. I took it as a sign they'd taped the episodes out of order. Thank you for clearing that up.
