Sheldon being a jerk is one of TWO primary bases for the show:  Leonard & Penny's relationship and Sheldon being a jerk.

If Sheldon is not a jerk, the show loses half its original source for comedy.

Same as with Leonard and Penny having a happy, functional relationship.  A happy, functional relationship isn't nearly as interesting as one with communication mix-ups, misunderstandings and some deceit.  Go back to Burns and Allen and "I Love Lucy."

If we want Sheldon to be less of an ass and for Leonard and Penny to be happy, it comes at a comedic cost.

I personally was not drown to Leonard and Penny having an unhappy, disfunctional relationship but to them clearly having feelings for each other and having to learn how to deal with it and come together. I find them the funniest when they're being playful with each other, in a way that has ease to it and does not cross lines in terms of being mean and snarky. I do not find them fighting over nothing, saying he wore her down and suddenly drifting apart in their life goals funny. I know I'm not the only one, but I don't have the resources to check what about Lenny drew most viewers (those who did/do watch for them) and what most viewers find funny about them.

Totally agree! I actually started watching the show after a YouTube video where Leonard and Penny were using a parenting book on Sheldon. Thought they were such a good married couple example, cute, funny, definitely different, but in a good way ☺️

I did the Warner bros studios tour and we went into stage 25. 2 swing sets, the cafeteria and one that looks like an office. The person who would sit behind it will be on the left of the screen so don't know whose office. All the 'junk' was stored in the hallway and the 2 apts looked dressed for filming.

Would love to see her get that PR position and see her attire then.  Also, I think it would be great in this final season that they show her receiving a sales award and giving an acceptance speech. This would justify her standing among the guys and her status as "Queen of the Nerds"

So true, but Sheldon would find a way to be a condescending jerk of an ass.

I think it was more about Priya wearing suits all the time, not just for work.

Nah, I think it was the pants suits in general! But, we'll never know for sure.

It really doesn't matter any more about "comedic cost", as this is the final season.

I've been married a very long time and I have never bought a matching shirt with my husband.  I bought a matching shirt with my friend and co worker for a conference we were attending.  My husband thought we were hilarious.
The problem wasn't Penny's, it's Leonard's.
Can you elaborate more on why the problem was Leonard.

Just by using common sense from all the  articles and his instagram post i think we can all come to a conclusion that he had a hard time making that decision

Makes one wonder if the s12 scrips he did see made it easier.

He was clueless about the office gossip. Penny knew Leonard wasn't into idle gossip. With Raj being more girl than man, he enjoyed the gossip. Moping during the shopping trip because he doesn't enjoy shopping, like most men plus he was ignored by Penny. Raj ,being more girl than guy, gets into shopping. He became her best female friend! Wonder why they didn't show Amy jealous about being replaced by Raj!

I thought it showed Raj would be a great gay character.

JP had a hard time making this decision so I don’t think so.

And how do you know this?

Oh okay, I'm not in the US and haven't seen anybody mention it so I didn't know. Thank you.

I think it's a pitty they don't use it, switch the old shot for a new one in honor of the last season, doesn't seem that hard.

I agree with you, but ...don't you feel as if the writers, producers, show runners, etc. are just phoning it in? It seems to me they just don't seem to put that much effort into it anymore or maybe it is just me being negative because I don't like the direction the show has gone in.

But it is simply just an assumption on your part. I have seen some articles plus his Instagram posts and I can't really say if he had a hard time or not. The only thing that I can ascertain with a certain degree of accuracy is that he put a lot of thought into the decision, but nothing more than that. Anything else is mere speculation.

Well...IMO, the problem was actually how badly the episode was written. I believe that what they were trying to show was how Raj acted like a girl with the matching shirt and the facial treatment, etc. I thought the story was pretty pathetic and uninteresting.

Jim, I believe, has thought long and hard in making this decision, so he, as I, believe it's the right decision. Tough decisions are suppose to hard to make.

At the end of season 11 Jim made comments that indicate he was pretty open to the idea of a season 13.  In the intervening months he starred in a play with a whole gay cast that was groundbreaking in its time.  He then sold at least a pilot starring an openly gay couple.  A romantic lead would be a huge change for Jim (Sorry Shamys).  I would bet a lot that his decision was based on the opportunities he is creating for himself and not some sudden  boredom with Sheldon.  I don’t Think it was a hard decision for him to make professionally- I just don’t think it was based on Sheldon-ennui

IIRC, they didn't make comments that were too commiting. I do remember it seemed like they were open to it but they didn't straight out say it. I think the most commiting comment was Kaley's (something like "you have to be stupid/crazy to turn it down").

It was tough in the sense that the decision effected the remaining cast and crew. He probably weighed the pros against the cons. In the end, he made the right decision.

I wouldn't disagree that the writers sure work with this premise but personally I don't subscribe to that.

Like, I personally like Sheldon more when he's less of a jerk and he can be incredibly funny then as well. Heck, I don't like the early seasons much cause his jerk factor was way up back then and it's annoying me to no end. If the show never bothered to change him I literally wouldn't be here.

I do think the writers could come up with new fresh stories if they only finally stop rehashing old predictable plots - both for Sheldon and Lenny. Heck, a lot of the "iconic episodes" most people seems to like are not about Sheldon being a jerk or Lenny being a terrible couple. Like, I don't think people like Bath Item because Penny's and Leonard's issues with the Underwood guy but because Penny gave Sheldon a nice present and Sheldon hugged Penny in return. That's the stuff that people remember and not the fighting and mean nonsense.

So...some restaurant? Maybe for a Stuart-Denise or Raj-Anu date? Or is this just the end of the cafeteria so I don't recognize these chairs?

Yeah, I think it was a hard decision for him emotionally cause on all accounts the show is tightly knit behind the scenes and ending it after such a long time would be tough on anyone who isn't a sociopath. But I agree, getting new opportunities outside of TBBT sure helped making this decision more than the idea that he's tired of it, if that makes any sense. The guy is busy as a bee with new projects lining up left and right and you can't put off everything forever so at some point he had to make the decision to follow his new endeavours or stick with the old comfy place.

In her defense, she was drunk, and it was 12 years ago 😅
