They keep saying it because neither of them has a better friend.

They have both said they were in the past.

They say it, but don't act like it. Leonard tries, Sheldon, not so much. He sees Leonard, Raj and Howard more like minions than friends. They are ends to Sheldon's means period.

I think this has been done intentionally by the writers. now that leonard is married and sheldon lives "only" across the hallway the relation must have changed a bit!

That would make sense, but hasn't been acknowledged. Their lines seem to suggest things are the same. Maybe they will at least acknowledge it at some point, probably the way they deal with many audience comments - make a joke about it, then keep going as usual. It would be interesting though if they did explore this more seriously.

Tell you the truth, I could care less unless the condescending jerk begins to act as a friend.

There have been times when he did. I do not share the opinion that Sheldon is and has always been an absolute jerk with ill intentions. I respect those who disagree.

The only times he's acted as a friend is when it effected him. I respect your opinion as well, but seems we disagree here.

You know what gets me....is that he does not knock anymore, just walks into apt. 4A as if he still lives there.  Why didn't Lenny change the locks and also put that table back now that Sheldon cannot dispute it and be a baby about it?

This is a tough one for me.  On the one hand, he has exhibited at times the behavior of a friend, such as when he asked Penny not to hurt Leonard when she briefly considered breaking up with him early in Season 6.  However his more frequent belittling every aspect of Leonard's professional and personal life outweigh those rare instances for me.  I could go on, but I guess I'm firmly in the "pissed-off at Sheldon" camp at present.....

Because they have no problem with him coming over? He's a friend and they still hang out a lot married or not.

The table was never going to be a thing, so many scenes involve the gang eating around the couch in 4A they were never going to lose that.  Also it could be difficult to film around that table, they have a nice established setup already.

OK Thank you for the explanation

We are just observers we are not a part of their relationships, we might watch them and wonder why they are friends and whether we believe they are healthy relationships or not.  But they have established friendships, they clearly need/want each other in their lives and you have to respect that.

I could observe yourself and your friendship group, you could observe me and mine and we would probably come away both absolutely baffled about how the relationship dynamics in both groups work because unless you live it or a part of it you simply can't understand, we are just observers after all.

He has knocked since he moved out in Season 10, pretty sure I remember at least one time he has.  Scenes also sometimes start as he is entering, he could have knocked beforehand.

Unless Leonard and Penny tell him he should have knocked I have to assume they have no problem with it and vice versa just like when they go over to 4B.

But, don't a lot of TV Shows do that? Good Times, Seinfeld, Friends, Roseanne, Full House/Fuller House, Family Matters, Two and a Half Men, etc,. Just to name a few. It kind of a running gag in a way to have character come in unannounced or uninvited without knocking or ringing the doorbell.  Raj, Bernadette and Howard don't knock. None of them knock or ring the bell when they go to Howard and Bernadette.

I don't knock when I go to to visit relatives

By the way, Happy Taping Dat!

Maybe, maybe not. Your opinion, not mine!

Exactly! It's TV convention and barely anyone knocks in this show. They'll have him knock when they come up with another knocking joke or if the situation really requires it for some reason but in general it's not something you'll need to show all the time.

Also, I  highly doubt the writers remember that table.

Until lately, when Sheldon went to someone else's place, he always knocked. Now he doesn't see the need to any more.

No, I think it was a one and done. We may have seen it, but it hasn't been mentioned again!

It only stands out to me because he always did his knocking thing all the time.

Yeah, now all of the sudden he stops. Just like the first few episodes he had a normal one knock, then changed to his signature three knocks!

Pretty sure they inexplicably explained the reason why he knocks 3 times. Was that he walked in on his father having an affair. So it went from being a funny, quirky thing Sheldon did. To this underlying creepy Compulsion of his. That is borderline pathological. I wonder if they well show that in YS. Joy.

Not what I was talking about. I was talking about how he started the show with a 1 knock like every normal person! Then changed to his 3 knock delivery as if he did the three knock from the pilot!
