Sheldon has always given the impression he wants kids.  His dislike of changed schedules, change in general, his dislike of germs and messes, loud noises, etc, gives the impression he wouldn't want to take care of them.

TBH I have never got the impression at all from the big 3 they were all that keen on kids. Sheldon is very creature of habit. Leonard I Think the most wants kids. As he wants I Am assuming to be a better parent than Bev was. Penny is a very independant character. But none of this is a shock.

I should hope opinions of things change over the years. That is normal. As people grow up opinions change. I do believe, and I am aware that you and chrismo will ALWAYS disagree with me. Sheldon has always wanted kids, and more so as he grew up. We will have to agree to disagree on everything but the color of sky.

As per usual I disagree with you. Babies need a schedule and Sheldon would be bar non the best at keeping a schedule. As I have seen him care for a sick Amy, I have no doubt that Sheldon would rise to the occasion.

Babies may need a schedule, but they don't follow them very well.  I would love to see Sheldon try to set a bathroom schedule for a baby, then deal with the mess that is changing.  Or a sleeping schedule.  If he thinks Leonard and Penny across the hall are loud, wait 'till he has a screaming kid, at 3 AM in the same apartment/house.  Remember what happed at the end of season seven when all those changes were thrown at him?   He may be able to adapt, given enough time, but kids never give you enough time to adapt.   I'm not saying he wouldn't rise to the occasion and try, just that he has a well known, self stated, aversion to changes, messes, germs, and noises.   Things a baby is outstanding at producing.

Well, in the end that's true for everybody, no? You only find out what you're made of when you actually hold that baby in your arms. There are people that always wanted kids, had experience baby sitting, read all the books and overall thought they'd do a great job only for them to fall apart when things got real. And then there are people that were never too keen on kids and barely, if ever, interacted with other babies only to then totally thrive as a parent cause it's their own kid which makes all the difference. How you react to having a baby at home is just so unpredictable.

And in the end Sheldon is a fictional character and he will be as good or bad at parenting as his creators want him to. In this case Chuck Lorre has already said at Paley last year (I think?) that he thinks Sheldon would be a good dad so there you go.

Yes I imagine Sheldon loving the baby but not all the stuff that comes out of him/her.

I could never forget the first night with the first baby at home. My first attempts at changing a diaper with spillage on the change table and the spit-up in my beard.  I could go on but there is a lot to adjust to.

No parent likes baby poo. lol

But babies are very different with that as well. We never had any big issues with baby poo accidents while my poor sister's baby had regular blow outs all the way up her little one's neck.

Sheldon strikes me as wanting to be the founder of a line of superpeople and he's prepared to suffer to see that happen. He's the sort that would call his future children 'progeny'. I imagine he sees their childhood is something he has to endure. He didn't enjoy his own, but once his offspring are toilet-trained and up to playing with his trains and toys he might get some unexpected fun out of theirs.

Sheldons changed over the years sure. Sometimes it’s like s1-3 cannon doesent matter anymore. Or ppl simply don’t recognise it as much. I don’t see Sheldon being a parent like Mary was. Ironically if Leonard and Sheldon became Parents. I could see Leonard being closer to Mary. And Sheldon more like Beverly.

I don't think "grew up" is really what has happened to Sheldon. Rather, the brilliant comic creation that was the original Sheldon has been destroyed in order to promote Amy to a ridiculous romantic heroine. These is not character growth but simply a complete redefinition of the character, as tho the uxorious drip we see now is a physical replicant who has taken Sheldon's place. The unique character who was such fun to watch  is gone.

There is still no reason to think he wants actual children, as opposed to descendents.

I think some people choose to ignore what happened on the show till Amy came on. Sheldon apparently didn’t exist till then.

Bernadette never wanted kids. And changed her mind. So I don't think its that implausible to suggest Penny won't.

What Bernadette didn't want was the mess, the noise and the wearing-down. Howard was willing to take all that on, or said he was. Chances are, he thought his mother would shoulder the lion's share of it for him. Bernadette was willing to have children so long as the whole burden didn't fall on her. They discussed this when they were engaged. By the time Halley happened, Howard was tied up with the guidance project and his mother wasn't there, but they did have a big enough place to live, plus Raj and Stuart pitching in. Bernadette made it clear she didn't want motherhood sucking the life out of her. It didn't. She liked having the money her work brought her and they found a superb workplace nursery. They're hardly ever stuck for babysitters. The second baby was a mistake.

Which leads me back to my point: they wrote him more non-caving prior to late season 7, so you must have expected them to continue to write him as non-caving, right?

I do not think they wrote him more non-caving prior to season seven. I thought he always caved more than he stood up for himself. I blamed that on Beverly, but that doesn't mean I don't like Beverly. I love it when she appears.

Where are the examples that they wrote him as caving, a majority of the time,  prior to season 7?

I will try to go back and look but I have my grandkids for winter break and I can't watch a lot of TV,

Its not a question of liking them or not their purpose IMO is to kill time.

If I like them, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, they are not killing my time.

The only thing that will save them if she reveals that she has a medical problem that makes it difficult to conceive and that she had been trying.

I can not see them doing this in the amount of time they have left. I just don't. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, I'm wrong sometimes when I guess, but I just do not see these writers going there. The only way I can think of that they might want to tie it in in time, knowing these writers,  is to have her commiserating with Zack about having this problem and I do not want that.

Actually Sheldon has been wanting kids for a long time now.

Since the test tube baby thing and that's a long time. Before that I don't know if the subject of him having kids actually came up. I can't remember. I'll have to go look that up as well.

Yes, he did. He was a major part of the show. The most major part of the show from the start.

Not really, just life played a trick on Melissa. She got really pregnant a year late and the writers panicked and couldn't think of a way to conceal the pregnancy! In sitcoms, there are always options.

For Howardette it was a mistake, aka an accident. They thought breastfeeding was a good enough contraceptive. It happens.

A surprise

A nicer way of putting it, used in many families.

Yeah, but that wouldn't have happened if the writers had thought out their options. When she really started to show, Bernadette could have been sent on a work related experiment. That being said, I loved the segment when Howard found out about baby #2. Simon did a great job there, as did Melissa!

Depends on the persons perception. Howard saw it in the beginning as a mistake with Bernadette saw it as a surprised. It can be said the other way around or both saw it as a mistake or surprise. It all depends on how each person sees it. I'd like to think it as a surprise because a baby should never be a mistake.

I'd guess they knew of options and chose the one they liked. A choice that to me appears to be supportive of the actor. Since it is just a sitcom it seems like a nice choice to me. Ultimately it really does not matter what direction the show takes so late in the run.
