Can’t beat Melbourne Australia for pointless public holidays. We have one for a horse race and one for the day before our Football Grand Final so we can watch a parade!

Veejay is not from the US.  So they may not be familiar with US specific holidays.   Presidents’ Day actually honors all presidents.  It used to be that there were two holidays, Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays.  The government realigned holidays in the 70s, (moving most of them to Mondays, for a three day weekend) or consolidating them, such as in the Presidents’ Day case.

Plus Washington was born on Feb. 22nd and Lincoln was born on February 12th so celebrating them both at once and splitting the difference was probably easier.

I didn't know what Presidents  ( or is it Presidents' ?)  day was, either. I wonder what percentage of this board is American BTW ?

We have a holiday in BC also. Family Day. It is relatively new.

Don't you also have Queen Victoria's birthday ? Is that to thumb the nose at the idea of a president LOL ? Worralaff :)

I wouldn't call it pointless holiday ( though I not sure why Kids  get day off from school)  You may or may not like the current President  but we have had some great presidents and some good ones and then a few decent but the rest are okay, medire or bad..  as Tensor said originally it was only meant as a holiday to honor Washington and Lincoln before it was changed in the 1970s to honor all (now) 44 Presidents.

President's Day is considered a minor federal holiday.  Banks and the stock market are closed.  There is no mail delivery.  Elementary and high schools are closed, but colleges and universities are open.  Businesses, retail stores and restaurants aren't affected.  There are no parades or parties to celebrate, so it's not really a big deal.

Which is why Kids should still be in school imo. Make it a day to teach kids about Presidential (and First Ladies) history. Instead it just another day off from school to them

They just made it the third Monday in February!

It is to some people!

My son is a fifth grade teacher.  They spent the whole week prior to today doing lessons that spanned every subject area, on the US Presidents.

I feel the same way about MLK Day.  I worked at a Catholic University for many years and we were always open on that holiday.  We devoted the entire day to remembering and honoring Dr. King's legacy through service learning projects, lectures, performances etc.  Then about 5 years ago they decided to close on that holiday. All of the on campus celebrations were gone and I had to question, was this going on in people's homes or neighborhoods, maybe.

It had been richly celebrated on campus.

All of Sydney thinks the Cup holiday pointless, I didn’t know about the Grand Final one, but then there is still Canberra Day to top them both, in the pointlessness stakes. But who doesn’t like to get a holiday, except maybe Ebenezer Scrooge. :)

Went down a rabbit hole of videos of TBBT Comic Con appearances on You Tube tonight.  All the way back to the first one in 2008 (they all looked so young)..to 2010 when Wil Wheaton was the moderator (my favorite)...up to the most recent one.

These actors have truly had an amazing ride being part of this show.

Wasn’t calling President Day pointless. As an Aussie not my place to suggest that. Apologies if I came across that way. I was referring to my horse race and football holidays back home. Fun but why?!?!

Yes. No. Really Canada has a history of avoiding being offensive. Especially around it's founding.

Victoria Day is in May. It is older than Canada.

Sheldon? Except insofar as he can have the department to himself. But would Sheldon know the last time Congress met on Christmas Day? As he apparently thought the Constitution was agreed between the 13 Colonies (sic), maybe not.

If Lincoln's birthday were still celebrated as such, Sheldon could arrange a celebration of Darwin's Birthday (also Feb 12 1809).

I worked at a school yesterday. The teachers were supposed to have it off but voted to work so they could remove one snow day from the end of the year. They had six they had to tack onto the end of the year.  Most school districts in the area, though, when asked to vote, said they preferred to take their day off.

That would have been cute if it was any other season. I can see Sheldon celebrating Darwin's birthday in lieu of persident's day,. But since they don't even celebrate all the character's birthdays regularly. I can't imagine them showing Sheldon lobbying for Darwin's birthday now.

Sheldon might also note (I think he did) that most cultures have rest days to keep the populace happy, many previously associated with religious events and re-titled as religions wax and wane. Saturnalia became Christmas, for instance. Interesting that Melbourne apparently worships horse racing and footy. :)  I think Sydney stereotypically goes to the beach on SUNdays. It’s prescribed in the name of the day, and we can be very literal here.

Darwin is arguably more important than Lincoln...yeah I said it, come at me! 8)
