Die Zimtzicke Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 3 minutes ago, joyceraye said: We say it either way if we're using the name of the month but if we're using numbers we say 'fifth of the fourth'. Also, we use the word 'the' in speech such as 'the fifth of November' or 'October the thirty first' but we omit the 'the' when writing. On a letter we'd put 'Friday,3rd March, 2009' under the address and phone number of the sender. This reminds me of a story I read where someone in the states was trying to open a deceased relative's old safe and couldn't do it even though they had been told the combination was the person's birthday. The ancestor was from Ireland so once they realized that they were putting the birthday in backwards, so to speak, it worked.

The igniting spark, which has marked this series, is unfortunately more and more painfully missed by many of us. I see it as it's coming to an end so I'll take what I can get. The show brought many enjoyable memories but Jim Parsons was right to say he couldn't go on--the writers ran out of material. (It's obvious with all the complaints about the story lines) I'm going to miss these characters but more so the actors. So I'll just enjoy it--it's a comedy. And, let's just remember--in the end--Kaley will go home to her rescues and Carl, Jim to Todd and their pups, Kanual to his cute dog and sexy model wife, Johnny to his girlfriend, Mayim to her cats and boys, and so on...But, in your head these characters can go any where you want them to Edited March 15, 2019 by shell

Why the fifth day of the fourth month has to be written as 04/05 bewilders me. There is no consistency on this in the documentation I receive so I am often guessing or asking for clarification. My own preference is for year/month/day as that is consistent with the way we write numbers in general. Most significant on the left least significant on the right. Wasn't there some sort of snafu with calculations regarding the ISS and the use of month/day/year by the US vs. day/month/year by Europe??? #FuzzyMemory

As a result, the orbiter got too close to mars at orbit insertion, and either skipped off the atmosphere, or burned up.

In reality, the Martians destroyed the Orbiter with an inverse proton beam.

They also drive on the same side of the road as the USA but in UK and Ireland they drive on the left. Scandinavia changed to the right some years ago IIRC. I heard the confusion with the building of the ISS came from mixing up metric and imperial measures but I don't entirely believe that one. In all my student and working life in science and engineering in the UK, I never used Imperial units for anything. CGS (now replaced by MKS) was often referred to as scientific units.
