Every show has it running gags and for The Big Bang Theory never revealing Penny surname is one of them.  I am glad they are not going to reveal her maiden name  in the finale. It Hofstadter now and then ll that matters.

Opinions like this imply that such a reveal would be stupid. All this questioning about what the "big deal" is and whether it matters or not will make the whole issue about Penny's surname, for lack of a more polite term, stupid.

What if I said that I'm not going to deal with it?

Anyway, you know what? We should have gone to the old Penny character/surname threads and discussed it right there. If it makes you feel any better, I don't understand why the show's writers created such a mystery in the first place. I wish Kaley had waited until after the finale to make the comments about this non-revelation. If you do not want to discuss this any further, I'm sorry I ever thought about Penny's maiden surname and what it could possibly be, I'm sorry I ever hoped for its eventual revelation, and I'm sorry I ever commented on it.

It's not supposed to be a grand mystery but just a quirky running gag. What does knowing her maiden name change? What kind of importance does it add?

It might be important to a fanfic writer. They might have Penny forgetting to update a licence or a passport or something. The ptb changed Penny's father's name to Wyatt. Perhaps he's one of those men who prefers to be addressed by his surname, without the 'Mister' title by his friends. It's old-fashioned, yes, but some men and even a few women still do that. If someone's writing a fan fiction or something about events before Lenny's marriage and want to be accurate as to how Penny should be addressed, they could have her be called 'Miss Wyatt'. In fact I think I've seen that in a fanfic somewhere. As Penny doesn't need to display diplomas in her maiden name in her office, it doesn't matter as much professionally as it does for Amy and Bernadette. In Tensor's story she took the stage name Penelope Jensen when she got a part in a sitcom.

Emily just didn't fit with the rest of the characters at all. She was a horrible choice from the start.

I think Anu 's even less of a fit. There doesn't seem to be the balance between her and Raj that there was even with Emily or Lucy. Perhaps if she'd been in more episodes she might have grown into the group.

Interesting... That would be  neat  if she did make a cameo.   i was shocked when she suddenly showed up at Sheldon birthday a couple seasons ago.  There had been no mention of  Leslie since Season 3 and then she appears out of nowhere as if they were still l coworkers the whole time. .

I got the impression Leslie didn't know much about what had been going on, especially as she was unaware of the Living Arrangement, so I concluded she must have moved away and come back for the party.

That's the beauty of fanfiction, you can invent what you want (and now that the show will be over without giving her a maiden name there should be no worry that the made uo one won't match the show's one). In my head it's Roberts because Penny once talked about her mom calling him Bob, so it being Roberts could solve this continuity problem (some FF writers solved it with Robert being Wyatt's middle name and another posible solution is the one you suggested above).

Penelope Jensen, by the way, came from the fanfic to which Tensor's "Broken Thread" is a prequel.

The show went 12 years without giving Penny a last name. Almost any last name now will be a disappointment to most people. The FF writers will have to just be creative and get around Penny's last name being unknown. Ask Fez what country HE came from, or HIS real first name.

As bfm pointed out, the name Penelope Jensen was from the original story, Elliptical Threads.  Elliptical Threads was written in 2012, prior to the introduction of Alex Jensen on the show.  Of course, since what I'm writing is basically a prequel, I had to use that name, and  I had an idea, to use it in a minor way, in my story.    I usually get around the Penny's last name dilemma by have someone interrupt  the person who is about to blurt it out.  An. example of something I used (slightly paraphrased), in my story about Leonard and Penny's trip to Nebraska.

...Penny's mother broke the hug with Leonard and said, "Leonard, it's so good to finally meet you."

Leonard smiled awkwardly and said, "It's so good to meet you Mrs..."

"Please Leonard," said Penny's mother, "call me Susan."

There was a male character in the press release of this episode, I can't remember his name, and his role wasn't clear. Since I read that press release,  I had wondered if this character had something to do with Leonard's plot and the reason why his mother was acting nice with him. I guess he is the the guy near Simon...in this case, don't you think he has a weird resemblance with Leonard himself? Maybe there's a family secret about to be unveiled!

His name is Todd Giebenhain, and the name of the character he plays is "Mitch"

I'm guessing that he is Beverlys new boyfriend, the bus boy. :icon_cheesygrin:

Doesn't he look a little bit too young to be Leonards father ?

In real life he's definitely too young : he's six years older than Johnny. However, none of them are in their stage personnae, so if he's made up he could be any relative at all. It'll be some hours before we know. I'm going to miss this.

They look a lot alike. I was just going to post that...

A secret sibling?

From the department of, I know we overanalyze everything, but I just found out something and I'm going to add to the over analyzation department,  Monday, CBS is running  a repeat of The Donation Oscillation.  The one where Penny tries to sabotage Leonard's donation of sperm, and her dad talks about her missing out on raising children.  I find it interesting (YMMV) they are running that particular one during the week of the final.
