I'll be surprised if they spin off, but I am going to watch and see how Young Sheldon goes. If it tanks, I think they will not think about it for awhile. if it chugs along, I think they might consider it. That's not based on what I want. It's based on how I think the showrunners think.

It will be interesting to see how Young Sheldon fares without the audience base provided by the 'mother ship'. There was already a drop off in viewer numbers between TBBT and YS and 'The Unicorn' doesn't look like anything special.

I watched YS since it followed TBBT and have grown to appreciate the program. I'll DVR it and see how the next season goes but it obviously has a limited shelf life simply because we already know George Cooper is going to die and Sheldon is going to college at a young age.

Any reboot of TBBT will be an absolute shocker to me. Jim Parsons has clearly moved on and I can't imagine him ever wanting to don the Sheldon persona in the future. The others will move onto other endeavors, but I think it will always be Parsons, and maybe Galecki, that will be the naysayer(s) that kill any TBBT reunion.

I can understand Jim Parsons wanting to move on from Sheldon Cooper. Twelve years in super hero shirts would be enough for most people, and I cannot disagree with his belief that he had (or would soon) age out of the role in a way that the others would not. He has always been very open about his love for live theater and it's easy to imagine him being happier in the anonymity that New York offers to celebrities wanting to live something to close to a normal private life.

TBBT had its run and from a quality point of view it probably ran too long. I can certainly see how some of the actors and production crew might have liked to see it continue as it provided them with a steady income and secure employment. TBBT made the big three quite wealthy. Less so for the other five main characters, and  most likely none of them will ever be considered the 'star' of any program in the future. No doubt they'll all find work as there are so many programming holes to fill these days it and will be hard for them to sit idle unless it's by choice and, for the near future, there will be projects that will want them for the name recognition they carry from TBBT. From what I've seen everyone involved with TBBT has said all the right things about the show ending and no one has expressed anything but support for Jim Parsons but, the fact is, that for five regular cast members, some supporting cast members, and a whole lot of production staff, JP is the one that killed the golden goose.

(I know there are some who will take issue with that last statement but that's how I see it. It's not meant as a criticism of Jim Parsons but the fact is that his decision impacted the lives of a lot of people in a major way and, the industry being what it is, some of them will never again regain what they lost when TBBT ended.)

I would hope five, cause 10 years might, or might not, be pushing it for me.  😉

I would hope it would be within five years as by then Jim and Johnny will be pushing 50 yrs old and who knows how they will look.  Kaley would probably have a baby but with her type of exercise regimen I doubt she would age that much.  I really believe that the Penny/Leonard story would be the only viable spin-off because of all the stories they did not show in the previous 3/4 years.

I could see where that was in the their thoughts. I, for one, have no issue with that statement.

I have to admit I would have an issue with that. As I agree with most you've written I believe JP was not responsible for what Lorre planned to do if one of the main three left. JP turned down a lot of money by not continuing--that says how much he wanted out. Why can't he look out for his own well-being--why is he responsible for everyone elses', too?

As far as I'm concerned, he did everyone a favor if one was to point fingers. To continue the show would only hurt everyone's careers in the long run

Interesting indeed. The ptb have stumped up for another two years' worth of episodes of YS so that should be enough to give it a chance to establish itself. I don't know what 'The Unicorn' is. YS isn't exactly in the same genre as TBBT so it's not going to attract an audience that is solely looking for laughs. It's far more serious and is somewhat dark in places. If it draws the sort of viewers who like that sort of thing, and keeps enough of them, then those responsible for continuing series will no doubt continue making YS as long as the cast are willing.

The only other spinoff I've ever thought would be similar enough but different enough to stand on its own is something based on Howardette and their work.

Although I kinda agree. The Lenny in me would love to see a Lenny spin off. Howardette could be in it as well.

I've always believed in my heart that if Jim hadn't ended it Johnny would have.

This can't have a long run as I see it. Are they really going to continue it with Sheldon at college, going through the same things he went through in high school but with taller kids? I don't see it working long term.

Lenny would of course be visiting them or Skyping them. Howardette are the most likely couple to be moved to a new place and be given a big change of scenario. That is, unless Leonard takes up farming when Wyatt has an accident or something. We could see him doing experiments on soil samples I suppose and designing new milking machinery, perhaps.

You and Shell are wrong about hurting their careers. Just my opinion as I can not see into the future as of yet.

Not necessarily. Lenny could move to New York where Penny's acting career gets a jump in the theater and Leonard gets a position at Columbia. They don't have to work the farm. I think Lenny being in New York is far more interesting than anything Howardette does.

New sequel: Hofstadter Acres

Leonard decides to quit physics and buy some farm land in Nebraska (near Penny's family) and make a go of it. Penny's brother becomes a (court appointed for community service) farm hand who keeps calling Leonard his dad.

You do not know that so we are not wrong

As far as I'm concerned, their careers have already been injured

Funny, as if Leonard with all his allergies, would buy farm land on purpose. Penny is happy when he visits the farm.

Maybe not injured, but certainly altered. A quick perusal at IMDB shows that of the main 8, several are unemployed. Others are involved in a variety of projects, but only KC is actually working on something in which she is the lead character.

TBBT was a rare opportunity for a group of non lead type actors to star in leading roles. Credit Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady for not only their vision in seeing these actors as good fits for the roles, but also for their courage in casting them instead of more mainstream (beefcake and pinup) choices. There is a great chance for all of the cast to continue to enjoy success in their acting careers, but the odds are long against them being a principal star on another program.

He isn't responsible for the others well-being. That doesn't alter the fact that his choice directly affected the well-being of the cast and crew who lost their lucrative, secure jobs. Fortunately, he chose to leave after twelve seasons and not, (like many others have throughout TV history), after only a few.

Again, I don't fault him for his choice. He was aging out of the character. Maybe it's a different story had he been in his early twenties when cast. He's in his mid 40s and the super hero shirts just don't fit like they used to... (Dame Maggie Smith had a similar take on continuing to play the apparently non-aging Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey.)

I agree, but (JP did just finish filming a movie and I heard he is to star in a new series by Ryan Murphy so he is working, too.)

It just irritates me when people at times act entitled -- like JP should have checked with them first before he made this huge choice in his life that effects it immensely.

In the end it was Chuck Lorres choice though. JP didn't actually say the show is now over--CL did--I don't see why JP should get the blame.

He shouldn't get blamed. But his decision did spur Chuck Lorre's reaction. Who knows, if he didn't do it, Johnny might have made that decision instead. I've read somewhere he had to be talked into the last deal.

As JP isn't responsible for how CL responds. CL is responsible for his own response.

And I agree, JG probably would have ended his contract anyway if JP hadn't

Chuck Lorre is responsible as it was his show ,his decision. But had Jim, Johnny and Kaley had agreed one more time, the show would still be on. Jim made his decision before Johnny had a chance. I don't think Kaley would have made that decision. But, that's all in the past.

My thoughts on this topic: Saying that Johnny would have ended things if Jim hadn't I think is problematical. Johnny would have continued if Kaley wanted to, not because of some affection for her but because he knew leaving would break up Penny and Leonard in some way and he did not want their story to end like that. And if he had to be persuaded to re-sign their last contract it was probably due to him wanting better storylines for Penny and Leonard.

53 minutes ago, chucky said:

There are several reasons for that, not just damaged careers.

I think Kaley is doing the best out of all of them. She certainly seems in demand after BBT ended and her production company is taking off and she has done many photoshoots, endorsements, and commercials. Johnny and now Mayim have production companies as well but I have not heard of anything on the horizon for them. Jim is doing well in  NY theater, however Melissa, Simon and Kunal have not heard any news on them as yet.

In my opinion, that is why he would make that decision. Lenny wasn't getting better story lines. Just continuing to support Shamy. It was a waste of the remaining cast to work a whole week for 2 mins screen time. She persuaded him once, but probably not the second time.
