I wasn't happy with them personally, since I'd fallen in love with the books in high school and I graduated high school in 1973. I'd almost memorized them in high school and college so everything they had changed in the films jarred me. I was always sorry for Eowyn, although I concede Arwen's loveliness. Die Zimtzicke
I've been hearing this all day so I'm going to see if any Brits here can confirm it...did the Queen wear the brooch that was an official gift from President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle during their visit in 2011 when she met with Trump and if so, was there meaning behind it, or was it just and American state visit thing? It's popped up several times in the news today.
Tensor
Although I'm not from the UK, she wore three brooches during Trumps visit. The first one, on the day he arrived, was a personal (not official) gift from the Obamas. The second one was given to her officially by Canada, not a country Trump is happy with. The final one, worn during their tea, was the same brooch her mother wore to her father's state funeral. BTW, the outfit the queen wore to the tea, was the same one she wore to her address at Parliament, after the Brexit vote. One British observer said of the outfit, "I think this is now her Official Outfit of I Don't Wanna."

I jokingly call it that (one of our members called it that) but in reality I just have a very good memory, I have a memory that allows me to remember something close enough that it can appear I remember something exactly. For instance, I have memories of being away from my parents in this dark room. Climbing out of my crib, and going from darkness to light with walls on either side of me, then getting pickup up and put back in the crib, then wondering why I couldn't get back out. When I relayed this to my mother, when I was a teenager, she told me I was admitted to the hospital one night for a 105 fever when I was 18 months. The nurses told her I climbed out of my crib, walked into the hall. One of the nurses picked me up and put me back in the crib, then they attached a netting to the crib, so I couldn't get out. I read something today consistent with that description (shared on F.B. by a cousin's wife who is a university professor and worked in England for a number of years. She thought it was plausible) . https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2018/jul/18/was-the-queen-sending-coded-messages-to-donald-trump-via-her-brooches-absolutely?CMP=fb_gu Quote on the first day of the Trump visit, the Queen wore a simple green brooch that was given to her by the Obamas to signify their friendship. On the second day, she wore a brooch given to her by Canada, a country with which Trump is less than pleased at the moment (also, it was in the shape of a snowflake, a classic Trump term for people who disagree with him.) And, for the last day, she chose a brooch the Queen Mother wore to the funeral of King George VI, so not one associated with happiness and joy. Queen’s brooches: 3. Trump: 0. djsurrey
I looked this up just now. I remember none of this about the snowflake brooch: Quote Presented in a momentous year that marks both The Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee and Canada’s 150thanniversary of Confederation, this brooch celebrates the historic and profound relationship between Her Majesty and Canada. It serves as a companion to the maple leaf brooch given to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother by her husband King George VI, to mark their visit to Canada in 1939; it was inherited by Her Majesty in 2002. https://www.gg.ca/document.aspx?id=16947&lan=eng

Every previous attempt to bring these stories to the screen were abysmal failures in my opinion. Here at least was an adaptation that captures some of the mystery, some of the horor and some of the glory of the original. The images of Rivendell an Lothlórien were superb I thought. I don't think I was as deeply steeped on the originals as you. I read the books twice as a teen and once again shortly before I heard that the movies were being made. I read them first at the recommendation of a cousin. The background served me well when my high school friends introduced me to D&D.

I have no idea. The only fact that seems to be different appears to be that this story puts the Canadian snowflake after the day of the tea. The rest of the difference is in the interpretation and I guess the understanding of what the Queen would do. Meaning that she does not wear stuff to troll anyone. Even Trump. https://www.macleans.ca/royalty/when-it-comes-to-the-queen-and-donald-trump-the-facts-still-matter/

She does have a sense of humor, though, like most of her countrymen do, contrary to popular belief. When I was in London several people from the states were asking the tour guides what they thought of Harry and Meghan and they all seemed fine with her, although they all had to point out that he is no longer close to the throne. One of them told us to all go home and look at a picture of Harry next to a picture of a younger James Hewitt. I found that amusing. That guide took us to the shopping mall outside Windsor to see the picture of Harry and Meghan done in legos. It's right next to the replica of Queen Victoria's train. However, there were also some isolated verbal clues: S5/E13 The Recombination Hypothesis L: We are next to a Subaru with a Gore/Lieberman bumper sticker.
