Why were Sara Gilbert, Kevin Sussman, and Laura Spencer promoted to cast members, when they weren't in the "couch" scene at the end of theme song?

On top of that, their names seemed to appear in the opening credits ONLY in the episodes they were in.  For that matter, they might as well put them in the closing credits.  If the couch scene wasn't going to be reshot for those three, what was the point of making them series regulars?  This is all too confusing, as opposed to sitcoms back in the day when you were either 100% one or the other (recurring or regular).

It's not all that confusing.  They were, what is called fractional main cast members.   This was so they were available, when they were needed. Sara Gilbert  was working in other shows, so, to make sure she was available, they made her a fractional main cast member.  As a main cast (fractional or not) her contract too precedence over all other contracts (up to and including Guest star).   This way, if they needed her, they didn't have to worry about another show needing her.  After the writers figured out that they really couldn't do justice to her character, they removed her from the main cast designation.  It was also around this time that she became one of the producers and stars of "The Talk".

Same with Melissa, who  was also shooting "True Blood" during season three of TBBT.   Her contract with "True Blood", superseded her contract with TBBT (neither were for main cast), which means, if there was a conflict for her availability between the two shows, "True Blood" was who she worked for.  That explains why she disappeared for the latter third of season three, when "True Blood" was shooting.   In season four, they made her fractional main cast, so, unless she was offered a full main cast contract, she would be working for TBBT when she was needed.   They told her just before "The 21 Second Excitation".

Mayim was the same as Melissa, guest star in season three, fractional main cast in season four, with Mayim's contract coming in "Alien Parasite".

They made Kevin fractional main cast in season 6, probably due to Howard's being in space.  Then demoted him in season 7.  Then re-promoted him in season 8.

Laura was shooting Bones at the same time as TBBT, so they had to work out who she would be working for each week.  They made her fractional main cast, so they could use her on TBBT when they needed her.  I found it interesting that around the time the made her main cast, they started reducing her appearances.

Due to SAG-AFTRA rules, if you are main case, you have to appear in the opening credits.  In the case of full main cast, in all the credits (See Kaley with the broken leg, she was still in the credits.  As fractional main cast, you only get opening credits if you are in the episode.   The opening wasn't reshot until season 7, Melissa and Mayim's first season as full main cast members.  They were the only two to be promoted to full main cast.

Yeah, about those back in the day sitcoms, one of the reasons is, it really didn't matter if you were a guest star or one of the stars.  The actors didn't get residuals, in either case, unless they specifically negotiated them (or they got them for the first few runs).  Well ignore how they had to work from 32 to 34 weeks without a break also.   That's why it's more fragmented now.  Guest stars don't get the same amount of residuals as fractional main cast members, who don't get as much as full cast members.
