You might as well as said Sheldon should have no friends either, all he knows and cares about science. -_- His friends impact on the way he acts especially Penny and Leonard so Amy is only a small part.

Very true. Why only blame the girlfriend? Compare Sheldon in 2003 (Staircase Implementation) with Sheldon after knowing Leonard, Penny and the others for a few years.. any kind of human contact can ruin a man of pure science and intellect.

Maybe the show should have been only about the unspoilt Sheldon alone in his apartment, for 7 years running. :p

Sorry but that would be AMAZING! The others could do their thing and be in relationships or whatever and Sheldon could maintain his quiet self contained disinterest and superior disapproval, as it all spiraled around him.... like it always does anyway! 7 years of the old Sheldon... don't even make me think about it. I would love that. Not dissing Amy or anything, she's his most suitable mate but still.... living the dream!

Well, when I said alone in his apartment, I meant ALONE, which Sheldon clearly hasn't been any time from the start of this show. :)

'Old Sheldon' always makes me want to ask - which one? Sheldon changed and evolved appreciably even between season 1 and 3, and more so between his pre-Leonard self (Staircase) to when we first saw him with Leonard. My point was that if someone disapproves of Sheldon showing any kind of straying from the path of pure intellect and science, then it's reasonable to disapprove of his friendships too, because he strayed enough because of his friends and Penny even before Amy came anywhere into the picture.

On the other hand.. thinking like a true obsessed Jim fan.. 7 years of only Jim/Sheldon is not something I would really mind, either. :p But then it wouldn't be TBBT.

I just spent an inordinate amount of time watching all kinds of BBT/JP-related videos online and in his Tavis Smily interview, I think it was, he talked about how these characters have been evolving and growing--and this interview was done back when the show was still on Monday nights.

I think that there is no such thing as the "old Sheldon". The only character that has had a very strong line of demarcation between who he was in the first season and who he became is Howard, but IMO, that change was natural and organic. As Melissa Rauch commented in a BTS interview, she said that she felt that Howard's womanizing was really a search for real love and that he's something of a hopeless romantic at heart, so his progression makes sense. And I think it followed a very natural trajectory once he met Bernadette.

It seems to me that watching these guys grow little by little is what the show has always been about and otherwise you'd be trying to preserve them in amber and make them unreal in characterization.

Yes, that's the eye-coitus. This term may not be welcomed by some here, but just had to get the terminology across. Also, there are whole sets of gifs depicting these particular moments, for anyone interested. :)

But seriously, his expressions in the Star Trek roleplaying scene.. at the risk of repeating myself, Jim is a genius.

Where is the gifs? I would like to see them.

I like Shamy I really do, I think Amy is perfect for Sheldon, but did Sheldon really need a relationship? He seemed perfectly happy. But come the day towards the end of the series when Howard and Bernadette and Raj and whomever have ridden off into the sunset, Leonard and Penny will want to move on too, that would leave Sheldon all alone, and no matter how you say it or think it, it would have been sad to leave him standing there saying goodbye to Leonard and Penny as they close the door on 4A. Certainly there will be a small percent that would say "no it wouldn't, if that's what he wants." but it isn't anymore, he missed everyone coming over to 4A so much he went out and got new friends to visit him. Shamy is necessary.

As a long-time avid X-Files fan, I know all about eye-sex and forehead sex(!) and all that sort of thing. ;P

Yes, JP is excellent!

Uhm, how can be a Sheldon who is alone in the world and nobody to interact with "funny"? What Pomita was trying to say that they should remove all the characters and have the Sheldon Cooper show.

I am so confused right now.

hi I'm new here but I think it would have been funny to have Sheldon as the only one of the guys with a girlfriend, while the others stayed themselves. Being that out of all of them Sheldon is the least likely to change who he is just because he has a girlfriend, what has been ruined on this show is Howard, Leonard and Raj, not Sheldon. I hardly find howard funny at all now, and Leonard and Raj are even worse. Although, I did like the way Raj was potrayed in the premier, even though he was lonely he didn't seem as depressing as the last 2 seasons. I like what they have been doing with Shamy. They have taken one unique character and turned it into two unique characters and a completely unique relationship that is funny as heck to watch develop. I think a better use for Leonard would be for him to find some personal happiness on his own away from penny. I think part of the reason the shamy works so well is that neither one of them was desperate for a relationship to begin with. You really can't be happy with someone until you are happy with yourself first, that is why L/P doen't work.

Phantagrae - Jim has always talked in his interviews of emotional growth for Sheldon and the others, the possibility of romance for Sheldon (even before it happened - his exact words were 'it would be such a wonderful thing to play with him.. see him in an out-of-control moment, because he doesn't have many of them'). He's extremely happy and enthusiastic about the Sheldon/Amy dynamics on the show, and his chemistry with Mayim.

Obviously many fans don't see eye to eye with him on these matters; I suppose they don't have to. But there's something to be said for an actor being excited about the material being given to him.

I like Shamy I really do, I think Amy is perfect for Sheldon, but did Sheldon really need a relationship? He seemed perfectly happy. Perfectly put. Sheldon claims that he doesn't need anyone, but it's always been clear that he does, right from the time when he went haywire in season 1 after losing his job, and then Leonard had to call his mother and she set things right.

I know that there are people in the world who are genuinely mature enough to be completely independent and self-sufficient alone, but Sheldon is so not one of them. He just likes to think he is.

I think part of the reason the shamy works so well is that neither one of them was desperate for a relationship to begin with. You really can't be happy with someone until you are happy with yourself first.

I really, really agree with this.

You know just last Friday, I made my cousin watch the latest episode of BBT and that she told me, "Those guys who play Sheldon and Amy have so much chemistry."

I was trying to be innocent so I asked her, "Really?"

"Yes!"

"How come?"

"I can't explain it but there's just something with those two. Didn't you tell me Jim's gay?"

"Yep."

"So maybe he's just bisexual."

"I think I know where you're going. Mayim's married with two kids. He's with Todd for ten years and counting."

"Oh?! That's a shame they seem so perfect for each other."

"You think?"

"Of course. Maybe they're best friends in real life."

She was unaware of how I already thought of that before she even spoke of it.

So, yeah, I think some of the eye coitus are not really the characters but just them. They even admitted they have a platonic love affair.

Thank you. Very interesting -- those two are seriously flirting with their eyes, and one of them is just jim and mayim, not the shamy... hmmmm. I want jim to look at me that way, lol.

Isn't it? Those gifs are a perfect collection for a rainy day. :) Thanks to jeanalice for posting them here!

There's definitely a self-confessed platonic love affair going on off-screen.. and it does wonderful things to what happens on screen.
